BEN HOGAN’S MAGICAL DEVICE

Ben Hogan’s magical device (the real secret to Hogan’s swing finally revealed) by Ted Hunt is a fantastic book with clear illustrations on how to properly move the hands, wrists and forearms through impact. Many people have professed to know what Hogan’s secret was if indeed he had one and I am not sure if this is it or not . What I do know is that all good golfers do what this book tells you to do. If you want to improve your ball striking, generate more spin and increase your clubhead speed then you need to read and follow this book. Because we swing the club it can be counter intuitive to understand how more speed at impact is generated. Once you understand how to do it and educate your brain on the moves involved you will be on a path to rapid improvement.

Read this after your recommendation and thpought it was good so picked up Hogans Short Game Simplified by the same author (Ted Hunt) which i find to be a much better breakdown of the swing and adds to the teaching in Hogans Magical Device.

Both are great companions to 5 lessons and between the these and a few others (like the mechanics of golf by Alex Hay) they have added pieces to the Hogan puzzle and made a huge impact to my golf game.

anybody who wants to improve their golf should read this book. Read it many times. Absorb what Ted Hunt is explaining about the various parts of Hogans swing. I have improved my distance by 10 to 30 meters on most clubs and straight hitting. I access my copy from a library in the Bay of Plenty, NZ. Its a winner.

Hogan was a left handed thrasher with a strong left hand playing right handed. He struggled with a hook under pressure, he weakened his left hand and learnt to use his right side better, the rest is history!
Weirdly I can now have a table tennis rally using my left hand ! I would have wiffed everytime 30 yrs ago! Golf has made me almost ambidextrous!

the secret is to press your left hand against the left side of the club thru the hitting area.

Maybe Hogan's coss-dominace was a big factor? Hard not to flip it at impact at full speed if you're trail hand dominant.

Interesting thing about Hogan to me was he felt he swung and sequenced his swing in order to get maximum power flowing into his arms and hands pre-impact. Hit with both hands. That said, he had distance control to hit a 5 iron 140 to180 yards.

Don't waste your time. The "secret" is in Five Lessons and the best explanation is in The Four Magic Moves.

Will this book help a 10 handicapper who already hits it pretty decent ?

Okay, so let me be very blunt yet try to be fair. The book sucks. It is written poorly. It is edited poorly. It was reviewed poorly. The pictures and illustrations rarely help and in many cases add to the confusion. If you can accept those drawbacks AND are willing to spend the $15 or so to get it and try to figure out what the heck he is trying to say, THEN, it might be helpful.

In the big scheme of things $15 is not a lot of money in the golf world. There are some ideas here to play around with and try and sort out. But the writer is seriously contradictory has all get out. Sometimes he is saying something 180 degrees opposite from one sentence to the very next. Still, if you want to take the time to ferret out and make sense of what you think he is trying to say, as he is sincere, it is probably helpful. But it is NOT clear or if the explanation is suppose to make it more clear, it simple does not. Anyway, for Hogan lovers, it only costs $15. Good luck ...
