I love that in 1997, guts have hard expression on stopping the sword weight as soon as grifith sword broke, as he know when it hit it gonna be fatal

Movie shows how the clash looks to an outsider while series puts us in their perspective.

Poor Griffith only tried to keep his best friend I hope they can become friends again and nothing terrible happens 🙏

Honestly both of them are so powerful in their own ways that you just appreciate both animators

The '97 version is better because of the character and storytelling. When you break down that instant in real time into nanosecond moments, you get Griffith's confident "Now!" believing that he will win, you get Griffith realizing that he's lost as his sword breaks and Guts bears down on him, and then Griffith realizing that Guts showed mercy. By drawing the moment out into these realizations by the character, the scene feels like it has more tension.
Its also a demonstration of Griffith's character that he is so focused on the fight that he can perceive these quick changes in their dynamic within the second that the duel takes place.
If you recognize what kind of character Griffith is, this is a much stronger way to depict the scene because Griffith would hyper-focus on these shifts; he is obsessed with power. Its not just the abstract idea of Guts leaving that irks him. The act of losing the duel, being pitied, being shown mercy, shook him

The 2012 just shows the entire duel in real time with the camera drawn back. All of the previously described actions happen simultaneously (there is no push-and-pull of Griffith expecting to win and then losing). You can barely tell who won until you see the half of Griffith's sword flying away. You don't see anything of Griffith's reaction until after the moment has happened, and then its unclear if he is reacting to anything besides losing the duel and Guts definitely leaving.

The difference has nothing to do with art style, but editing and directing.

97 was amazing! Especially given their budget. The animation, the soundtrack, the voice acting was good!! I’m excited for the new fan made anime

2012 animation is good, however, imo, it looks too pretty. It looks cleaner and colorful. I prefer 90s version dingy grounded aesthetic.

The the 97 cut, you see how much effort Guts puts into stopping his blade to spare Griffith, while Griffith is actively thinking how much better it is to kill him here and now vs letting him go.

97 version was flawless really slows down the time making the scenary show like the snow slowly sliding popping out with the patience of each swordsman as well as the reaction times of both characters. Another slow motion is right before there swords collide you can still see how there bodies are moving and the suspense from griffith nearly shitting himself in two. In the 2012 version it seems like they money dumped on the animation which cut some of the scenary out giving it tops 1 second over the 3-5 seconds of details surrounding the area as well as cutting dialog. When they swing there swords they change angles hella fast and instead of it slowing down it just happens cutting out small glimpses of detail over animation. Also Griffith looks more lost for words rather than shitting in fear. 97 version imo did a better job especially with the emotions of both characters instead of it being all about Griffith.

We need a 1997 anime expansion! Same art style just remastered! 97 did Berserk justice, shame we only got the Golden Age Arc

Both of them are better. No, I will not elaborate.

The dialogue is what made the scene phenomenal, why there swords were colliding is what had me in suspense.

I would like to add that in 2012 version, i think they made a great move - as Guts walks away, Griffith is in shock. But when Guts says goodbye as he walks past him, Griffiths eyes go from lost in shock to open as wide as can be, like it really sank in after hearing goodbye.

The exact moment when Griffith lost his mind. I know what he does after, but I just can't see him accepting the final sacrifice if his relationship with Guts never changed. After this everything went downhill for Griffith... so sad

97 a masterpiece ✨✨ we wish that there's a 2 season of the black swordsman with the same version and the art😔
