Part of the confusion for folks is that the word "dollars" is often used in Mexico to refer to Pesos. It can be seen in some advertising and on social media.
Mexican "dollars" are pesos.
Always ask if you are concerned. It can be confusing at times when one is flustered or just tired.
Relax and be kind to yourself and others at these times. Breathe, and begin again.
Edit, and smile because you are in Mexico!

A person must have lived some kind of sheltered life to think that U.S. dollars come out of a Mexico ATM.

Get pesos out of the airport ATM, when you arrive, You can get 10K if you press next. Some times you can pay your rent with your debit card. Try to have 2 different debit cards, so you can withdraw from both. Try to keep 6 months of money and 6 months of home delivery.

I know baja California loves US $ Dollars businesses in Baja California prefer US$Dollars over Pesos.If not mistaken I believe the $$$ Dollar Sign was invented in Mexico.
