The World's Most Confusing Currency (IRAN)

One of my favorite things to do whenever I enter a new country (like Iran) is analyze their currency situation, exchange rate, and how these things affect their economy.

I’ve handled many inflated currencies over the past few years -- such as the Indonesian RUPIAH and Vietnamese DONG — but here in Iran, the RIAL gets a lot more confusing than inflation.

Iran has 2 different systems to count their money. The first is RIALS (the official Iranian currency), and the second is TUMAN (which is like the Rial, without the last zero). As a traveler, you don’t know which price is listed unless you ask. $1 USD = 50,000 Rials and that same $1 dollar = 5,000 Tuman. Sound confusing? ... It is!

Moreover, the only way to get money in Iran as a tourist is by bringing lots of cash (USD or Euros is preferred) and then exchanging it for Iranian Rials when you arrive. The reason is that there are no ATMs in Iran that cater to foreign banks.

If you are as confused reading this as I am typing it out, then this video will explain the confusing world of the Iranian Rial a little better.

Just curious, did you know anything about this before I made this video? Please share your thoughts on this below! And special thanks to G Adventures for hosting me on this life-changing trip!

When I was in Iran, I was approached by a British gentleman whose father had passed on the plane and the plane had made an emergency landing in Iran for that very reason. He was visibly distraught and nervous about that whole situation and Iran's confusing currency system had become a double whammy. I'm glad I resolved at least a part of his problem by explaining how our currency works.

*You take out a wad of cash for them to count?! Be careful they don’t rip you off!*

Edit: I would be cautious in any market in any country, not any particular one.

5 tuman. Is 5, 000. Similar to 5, 000 being 5k. Its just easier that way.

Actually the last part is totally wrong. Iranians don't rely that much on cash. Foreigners do because foreign credit cards are not accepted by local businesses. The reason for that is Iran's political isolation and America's long-term policy of keeping Iran a pariah state. Hence companies such as Visa or Mastercard have no agreements in place with Iranian banks.
Having said that, Iranians themselves heavily rely on debit cards and use them everywhere to pay for everything.

Each dollar equals 90, 000 rials right now and if you got 25 million rials for 800 dollars that means you sold your dollars for 31, 250 rials which is even less than 1/3 of the real exchange rate. Watch out for who you are dealing with.

First of all thanks for the video Drew.
I want to post an update to the video :
In May 2020 Iranian parlement decided to finally change the currency to Tuman (So one zero here) and the new Tuman equals 10.000 current Iranian Rials (3 zeros here). So in the video you said the shopkeeper asked for 2 Tumans and he actually meant 20.000 Rials. The new currency will make that 2 Tumans official.
I hope it helps us not to have the most confusing currency ever 👌🏻👌🏻
