In tonight's top story: More than 100 mourners gathered in Ottawa on Sunday to remember six people killed earlier this month inside their suburban home. The funeral service paid tribute to Sri Lankan victims — a mother and her four young children as well as a family friend. The father of the children — the only survivor of the attack was also in attendance, still bearing the scars from the attack on March 6. In a written statement, he said that he is devastated. Mackenzie Gray has more.

The polls are now closed in Russia’s first presidential election since the country’s full scale invasion of Ukraine. The results confirmed expectations, with Vladimir Putin winning a fifth term as president. The election commission in Moscow says Putin secured around 87 per cent of votes counted so far. Putin’s most prominent critic, Alexei Navalny, died in an Arctic penal colony one month ago. And on Sunday, his exiled wife Yulia Navalnaya called on voters to protest at the polls. Redmond Shannon reports.

Meanwhile, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was in Halifax, where hundreds turned out for a St. Patrick’s Day rally. Poilievre continued his calls for the Trudeau government to “axe the tax” — a reference to the federal carbon pricing plan which is set to increase next month. But how much will that actually cost Canadians? Heidi Petracek reports.

To avoid pain at the gas pumps, more than 350,000 Canadians have taken advantage of federal rebates to purchase electric or hybrid vehicles. But those programs that began back in 2007 are set to end next spring. And Trudeau’s cabinet is now facing pressure to extend the rebates as part of an overhaul of Ottawa’s electric strategy. David Akin has the details.

In Manitoba, dozens of animal rescue organizations have declared a state of emergency. They say they’ve reached a breaking point as animal populations grow out of control and stray dogs become more aggressive. Melissa Ridgen reports.

And finally, Alberta’s premier says a decision this week by British health officials is in line with her government’s plans on transgender healthcare. Under a new policy, U.K. patients under the age of 18 will no longer be able to access puberty blockers unless they enroll in a clinical trial. That decision follows a four year review of published research, but critics say politics are at play. Heather Yourex-West reports.

Electric vehicles are NOT a blanket solution. They do NOT do well in rural areas, where the electrical grid can be shotty at best, and the distances between communities are LONG, nor can they be used for semis, or airplanes, or ships... I'll admit, they are ONE of the solutions... But I say that Canada should also invest in developing HYDROGEN cars... THEY have the same capabilities as gas cars, emit only water vapour, AND have been proven as a technology that can be retrofitted into existing gas-powered cars. If Trudeau could implement THAT IN ADDITION to the EVs, THEN I might agree with the guy... And again, I do agree that the Carbon Tax is a good idea WHEN USED AT THE RIGHT TIME. I would agree to put it in ONLY AFTER MOST TRANSPORTATION DONT USE HYDROCARBONS AS THEIR FUELS! But BEFORE? Take it off for now, and only focus on incentivising getting EVs and H2 cars on the road. This needs to be THOUGHT THROUGH, and Trudeau and Guilbeaut CLEARLY haven't done that

How many electric vehicles are made in Canada - ZERO. So the subsidies are flowing to other countries. Climate change will end and be reversed long before the western democracies build out the infrastructure to support electrical vehicles.

1. Carbon emissions are directly proportional to population. The population collapse has already started in Europe, Japan, Russia, and China. By 2035 the world's industrial population will be cut in half and carbon emissions with it.
2. All of the western democracies, have not only flatlined their carbon emissions for 10 years but most have made significant reductions.

But despite the above China is now the largest producer of atmospheric carbon and they are building coal fired electrical plants to produce the electricity for their electrical vehicles.

China now produces 13, 000 million metric tonnes of Carbon each year and increasing exponentially - compare that to the no. 2 producer USA which produces 5, 000 metric tonnes and is flatlined

Why are we bankrupting Canada to make room for China to produce more Carbon. There is nothing we do as Canada that can impact Climate change when you have countries like China. If we really want to impact climate change then Europe, Canada and the USA need to introduce massive trade sanctions against China until China demonstrates that it is part of the worldwide community.

There are not even enough charging stations in the cities, let alone you are on a long drive. Only punishing people with tax is not helping, government has to do their part first.

The father has to be heavily medicated because anyone would lose their mind if all of their children were brutally murdered.

As an expat who has traveled to and from the southern US, Canadians are being left in the stone ages, and it's not going to get better for a very long time. Canada used to be at the for front in very many ways....Trudeau has pulled our country so far under in debt, and has fallen behind in too many ways to list. He's signed closed door deals that the common civilian knows nothing about until they are affected by it. Because of all of this, our beautiful country will never be the way it once was...And will take generations of work to try and make the country even close to its former self...

Here's a thought. Stop giving oil companies money and put that money towards building Power generation, EV infrastructure and Better tax rebates for EV buyers. While we are at it. Limit charging station prices to the local price of publicly delivered hydro + a percentage that creates a reasonable "break even" point for ROI (i.e the amount needed for a charging station to pay for its construction/maintenance vs expected lifetime of station).

Government has supported oil and gas companies with around $20 billion in 2022.

$12 billion in loans and financial support for the TransMountain pipeline.
$500 million in loans to the Coastal GasLink Pipeline.
$300 million to help with decarbonization projects.
$78 million to help the oil and gas sector grow and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions.
$20 million to help oil and gas companies reduce their methane emissions.

The vernal equinox took place on March 17, 2024. Four days should be added to the calendar so that spring arrives on March 21st.
