Muslims First Arrived In America As African Slaves | Dr Akbar S Ahmed

In this episode on New Wave History with Raza Rumi and Dr. Akbar S Ahmed, the two discuss the evolution of the Muslim community in the United States of America, problems faced by the communities in the region, the history of African-American Muslims, Immigrants and the Converts.

Dr. Ahmed cites an example from his travels, when an Imam from Las Vegas shares his experience of being a Muslim in, what is known to be the ‘Sin City’. The imam states that The Prophet (PBUH) grew up in Makkah with sin, and idols around him. Thus, practicing Islam in this part of the world is a greater challenge.

Dr. Ahmed also explains how Muslims were brought to America from West Africa and the challenges faced by these people. He shared his observations from his visits to numerous mosques within the United States and how it has shaped the Muslim communities.

As-salaam Alaykum- Dr. Ahmad is so correct on most of these topics. I'm a Muslim American (Black American) not African American I make that distinction because Africa is a continent with 54 countries and it's really hard for me to say where my ancestors are from. Black Americans long ago adapted this term because our longing to attach ourselves to a homeland not being conscious that this is our homeland our ancestors built it with their blood and bones. Now it's the most wealthiest and most powerful country on this planet.
I been studying islam for 45 years I was raised by two loving parents. My father was a Baptist minister as long as I can remember. What guided a lot of my peers to Islam was the messages we received from the Christian church that we (Black American) was cursed by Allah. Another was the White Christ Jesus who was God in the flesh there was so many things that just don't make sense.
Before September 11, 2001. America in our view looked at Muslims immigrants like Caucasians and treated them as such. Even today after 911 Muslims countries receive more financial assistance than Christians countries. 8 out of the top 10 countries receiving aid are Muslim countries.

Lincoln’s America owes more to the world of Enlightenment than to world of Jesus. When Americans pay tribute to the Declaration of Independence of 1776 and American Constitution of 1787, they are paying tributes to the philosophers of Enlightenment. Among them John Locke stands supreme. American founding fathers were diligent readers of history. They had seen the bloodletting during the religious wars in Europe. In American Constitution, they kept religion out of American secular undertaking. All these intellectual developments are alien to the Muslim world. Islamic world is a world of failures. It’s a world without a head. It is parasitic. All of them produce nothing but death, destruction and refugees.
