Sometimes, the lead stallion can have a co-stallion who is either their brother or close friend. They may scuffle but they generally share the mares and protect them together.

Actually, the young mares (fillies) are also expelled from the herd around the time of their first heat. While the colts will form batchelor bands, the fillies will be quickly picked up by roving stallions and added to their herds. This prevents inbreeding. Wild mustangs will not normally breed with their offspring unless forced to do so.

I don't know why this video is always recommended to me as soon as I open YouTube. I didn't want to watch the video but after recommending this video to me for the 10th day in a row, I am watching the video.

I love how the horses casually walk around and stand like humans.

Of course, there's the alternate path. A human finds you, and you make a deal. They feed you and protect you, and you carry them. There are numerous side quests that branch from this, each with their own interesting story.

I can see why horses eagerly embraced human domestication. Imagine living your whole life as a boxing/MMA career.

This is surprisingly accurate and amazingly presented 😂 But a couple corrections if I might be so bold:

1) There is no leader (or dominant horse, etc.) in a horse band. The stallion is not the "leader" (and there's no "lead mare" as many have heard. Another pervasive myth). Any horse can initiate group movement. There's no linear hierarchy. It's the same situation as with dogs and wolves: dominance theory has no scientific basis and these animals naturally live in cooperative family groups where honey catches the most flies

2) Stallions actually do chase off fillies (female foals) in addition to colts (though not always). This is a form of incest avoidance because obviously mating with your daughters forevermore wouldn't be a great evolutionary strategy

3) Mares do more than birth and rear young. They protect their foals and can lead the group, as can any horse, meaning stallions aren't the "leader to food and water". Stallions also play with their offspring, helping to rear them and allowing mares a break. Again, it's a cooperative family group, not a hierarchy

4) Mares don't just mindlessly walk off with a new stallion. They form bonds with their stallions (and vice-versa) who they likely live with for years. Horses form attachment, same as us

This channel is perfect for showing that suffering is a part of life but not in a negative way.

Alright that was a pretty solid video, although there are some factual mistakes.
1. There are often multiple stallions in a herd but most of the time only one is dominant.
2. The dominant stallion is not the "leader" of the herd, an older mare takes that role.

I got way too into researching horse behavior a while back! Modern research has actually been demonstrating that the stallion of a herd is *not* the leader but rather the *enforcer* of the leader. The stallion does not choose or lead where the herd goes, but instead acts as both the protector of the herd but also the “herding dog” to make sure the mares and foals stay together and nobody wanders off. Its believed that the oldest mare is a more traditional “leader” but its also been observed that herds also rotate “leaders” in movement (as in, herds are not reliant on a single horse knowing/deciding where the best grazing is, horses are not extremely smart so its more just instinct to follow whatever horse seems to be confidently running. Domestic horse owners have commented on this behavior)

Love how the thumbnail is so intricately detailed, yet the video is so cartoony. Feels like the video game trailer vs gameplay.
So glad to see your channel blow up, keep up the great work!
