The U.S. Coast Guard offered their deepest condolences to the families of the passengers aboard a Titanic-exploring submersible after debris from the sub was found on the sea floor. The debris was "consistent with a catastrophic event" suffered by the pressure chamber of the sub. Jericka Duncan anchored CBS News' special report.

Lesson, don't go and visit the Titanic in an uncertified experimental submersible. Heart goes out to the families.

My heart and condolences go out to the families. What a horrible accident this is. It angers me that this sub was not safe when it went down and no safety measures were in place for the passengers to escape. It was a death trap. My heart goes out to the families. This breaks my heart.

That coast guard spokesman struck the perfect balance of sincerity and compassion. Sad for the families. Glad they didn't suffer.

The fact that they found anything is amazing!

I served on a Navy sub. There is a reason they were 3 to 4 billion dollars. Many safety backups and backups to those. Unbelievable that the CEO who was actually on it wasn't concerned about the viability of being that deep with his vessel. One of his employees said that the window wasn't strong enough for the depths they went and he was fired.

Atleast the child got to live the rest of his life with his parents…

The CEO (the one who died in the sub) knew about the safety concerns. There was a viewport that was only certified to a depth of 1300meters even though the sub was going down to 4000 meters. One of the employees brought up that concern and was met with resistance.

So the company knew they cheaped out on the viewport and this is what happened, sad times

This is really sad. But there is a villain in this story. The CEO who ignored safety warnings and wouldn’t allow a third party to audit the equipment. This negligence is evil.

Edit: because this comment got a lot of attention I would like to add: it is sad to see the difference between the efforts to find these billionaires versus the efforts made to save refugees who constantly die in trips at sea. In this world you matter if you have money.

You found them. Amazing work to the coastguard, so glad you didn’t lose anyone yourselves in your superb rescue efforts.

I can’t say this enough SAFETY #1 . That vessel should have never been deployed until Structural Integrity was determined. My condolences to the family of 5 victims. I hope we can learn about this negligence and move on 💪🏼

As macabre as this might sound, catastrophic decompression is probably the most painless way to go in this situation. The idea of being stuck at the bottom of the ocean in pitch dark for days on end before slowly dying of asphyxiation sounds like something out of a horror movie.

Thanks to the Canadian ship Horizon Arctic for locating the wreckage and to all the teams who helped in the search.

My six years in the Navy taught me, the sea can be very unforgiving and dangerous.

The 19 y/o boy was absolutely terrified to go and was not "up for it, but went anyways to celebrate fathers day with his dad". That's one of the most frustrating things about the story

This is so tragic the 19 y/o son was terrified going in the submarine but he still went just for his dad for Father’s Day and didn’t want to disappoint him.. So heartbreaking my deepest condolence goes to his family and all families that lost their loved ones Rip to all 5 victims
