Finishing songs can be extremely difficult. That's why i've been using this technique to help finish songs faster. Basically take a song you love, that has a similar vibe to yours, and copy it's arrangement! This will teach you how to structure songs of any genre, and help you learn how to make music faster! I know that all sounds like a terrible infomercial but there's a lot of truth in it hahah. Either way i hope this helps you out since it def helps me!

I really needed this. I have about a million 4-bar loops that I've come up with but I can never figure out the path forward from there. Finding a similar song and trying to trace the structure is such a good idea. Thanks for making this video!

I like the idea, it's a great way to escape the horrors of arranging a song and lack of inspiration.

I absolutely LOVE this mindset! I've finished so many more songs after adopting this. 15 years back I would have had this notion of "I have to invent the wheel every time I write a song, everything else is stealing". That creates so much constriction.

man you have literally just tore down a huge brick wall in my mind. i literally have about 300 projects that sound good, that i got stuck on structurally and moved on from. Thank you for everything!

my preferred method - - Jam and record it all. It will sound bad for a bit then get good...then get bad again. Take the bit that was good and remix those stems. Intro, build, release, breakdown, build, outro. Give the stems to friends and have them also do remixes - they will think of things you didnt - now you have a B Side to.

I really appreciate that you don't overly edit your videos by cutting out blank space between words/sentences like a lot of current creators. It's super refreshing and human to just see someone explaining a concept without trying to jam as many words into one attention window. Thank you.

This is really a great tip. When I first got into producing years ago, like many, I struggled with arrangement of tracks.
What I used to do as an exercise is similar to this "tracing" idea. I would import and correctly warp a track from an artist I liked. Then using empty midi tracks and blocks, I'd paint in what sounds where playing and when. So like chords progression A, B; melody A, B; various Drums; bassline; FXs; vocal lines; etc.

After doing this, you can zoom all the way out and BAM! You've got a very complete and in depth skeleton of the track in question. What's left is almost a kind of "paint by numbers" to just filling up those empty blocks with your own sounds to complete the production.

When I was a kid I would turn on Bob Ross to relax and learn, now I watch your videos to relax and learn.

Been doing the block method the past year and went from being stuck in the loop stage and folders filled with “idea loops” to finishing 4 tracks in a weekend. When I say finished I mean the arrangement, and first draft. Before I come back a few days later to fine tune. I find hinting elements before the first major drop is key. Letting everything breathe. Chipping away at the track. 🙏🏼 love the content!

Ayy, that's a great shot of Morro Rock! Also, I've really been digging the EP.

I love how your camera looks and just the whole warm / homey vibe of your studio and and how it matches to the warm sound of your music.

The way he said “then the drums die” made me realize we are all humans that will also die when it’s our time, and it only contributes to the entire beautiful song of existence

Love how you explain arrangement which can be a mundane part of music making but you explained it in a more meaningful organic poetic kind way making it more exciting to get back into it. Much ❤

This!!! I've done a similar thing on pen and paper, to try to grasp the building blocks behind "x" song. But doing your thing MAKES SO MUCH SENSE

"Tracing song" is an absolutely correct definition of that arranging-style :) I remember how I used to "trace" The Chemical Brothers - Leave Home around 20 years ago. That was my first experiments of creating tracks. Acid by Sonic Foundry (I guess) was my first DAW, or Fruity loops maybe. As a result I created another track with nothing similar to "Leave Home". A bit later Session-workflow in Remix Live (a predecessor of Ableton Live) was a dramatic game-changer for me. Today you can make tracks in Session-workflow even using Korg Gadget on your iPad which is totally cool! Especially when you have a super combo setup like Ableton+Push-2

Loving music life since Ricky popped up as a suggestion on another MPC House video.
Spending time sat on Ricky's shoulder as he creates is about the best fun, and most educational time I think I've ever had with a teacher of vibe!
