In NO way is this video meant to be "bashing" or knocking anyone down... as I said in the video - this is something I really struggled with early on! I am wanting to be honest and not beat around a bush on this because I have seen in my own life how negatively impactful it is to consistently leave work unfinished - and I have also seen how much it has improved me to turn that around and work on finishing almost everything I start!

Hope this encourages you to finish your music more not only for your own development but for your own happiness!

This isn't just for music... this attitude is for life.

Great advice. The title really grabbed my attention. When finishing something for someone else, having a deadline can really force you to just get it done!... When it comes to your own music, I think sometimes people are afraid to pull the trigger and finish a song because they have this constant feeling that it could be better. Maybe this or that should be louder, maybe this harmony can drop out in this spot or whatever. I read somewhere, I think it was an Elvis Costello Biography. He said, " a song is never really finished, it's only recorded at a certain point in time". I thought that was a good one, Remembering that sometimes helps me to just pull the trigger and finish it. Usually after you live with it for a while you start to accept it. Anyway, I made this video a favorite to watch again when I need some motivation.

you're totally right. i have 132 unfinished cubase projects on my harddrive. they're all song ideas i started and never finished. i supposed it would make sense to go through all of them and either finish the songs, even if they're not perfect or delete it... but it's so hard xD - thanks for those words, they hit me spot on.

You are so right!!! 2014-2016 I started on 30 different songs. Then I laid it all off. I started a fresh start 2022. I decided that I should start with one song and never stop until it was done. Now I have three songs that I will release in Januari 2023!!!

Another reason for not finishing is just getting bored of the song, melody, harmony etc. that sounded like a great idea just an hour ago. So the challenge is to create a song without listening to it too much. The more you listen to it, the more you can hear to improve it, but the more likely it is to remain unfinished. <- future video ?

Don't be so afraid to call out and scold bad behaviours. I needed this. You have no idea how much unfinished shit I have in my Bandlab.

Thanks for the encouragement. I have found myself going back to my unfinished projects lately. I think they are cluttering my mind. It feels good to get another one done. I have found taking a break to be very helpful, though. It's a balance.

It comes down to removing distractions and being efficient. The new project button is a distraction. Listening to a podcast in the background during the creating phase is a distraction. Efficiency can mean taking a break, like you mentioned sleeping on it. Really getting used to being alone with the project makes it easier and easier to evaluate what you need to do for efficiency (pushing through vs. taking a break). Also don’t get married to your work - sometimes you need revisions and people don’t want to undo work they put in. Deleting previous work is GOOD because what you axed feeds directly into the choices you make next.

It’s a great topic and glad you are shining a light on it.

I think it’s ok to start as many projects as possible. Get the rough sketch down in the Daw on paper or an audio file. if you feel the heat then you probably will complete it or come back to it. Sometimes the simplest roughest ideas have the most potential.

I think we need to caveat this a bit. I have dozens of songs I haven't finished and it's not because I don't want to finish them, it's that I have put a build up and a drop together and decided that I really don't like the sound and moved on to something else. I don't mean quality or it being too challenging, I mean I listened back after a day or so and decided it wasn't a creative idea worth carrying on with. I have also finished dozens of songs. The ideal situation in my mind is to take your advice, but also be able to objectively listen to something and decide whether it's worth continuing with.

Y'know what the funny thing is, I watched this entire video and this can be applied to any form of creativity. I do music and art and I struggle a lot with continuing to do projects because so many of them are "hard" and require "problem solving" of some sort. I am so happy I stumbled across this video because you may have saved me honestly.

I think maybe I just need a change of mindset of how I perceive problems and I need to work on my mental health a bit more so that I can more healthily go into the music and art projects that I start.

I always had a habit of making songs, but then I sometimes am like... Ugh I don't like how it sounds so then I end up slowly forgetting about it and leaving it on the back-burner and never coming back to it. But for now on I am going to try my best to not do that anymore, and to just imagine how it feels for when I solve the problem. I think that will be the thing that ultimately saves my passion for creativity.

I've had this problem for years now! Have well over 30 projects semi done or near completion and never end up finishing. I've dug myself in hole but this gives inspiration to get out of it 😊

Flstudio demo is the best thing to ever happen to my music. Session had to be finished since you can't reopen a saved file until you purchase it.
