An easy oversight but proof that things like this can certainly be overlooked. I wanted to document the exact reason why even new gaskets can fail. I accidentally installed my new timing cover & gasket over the old existing timing cover gasket. FAIL FAIL FAIL.... Save yourself the hassle and REMOVE OLD MATERIAL FIRST!

Good video, made the mistake of buying cheap timing cover gasket on my 5.4 ford leaked three weeks later. Went right to Ford for the next gasket. What a difference, worked great.

My problem was, I didn't install the harmonic balancer before I tightened the timing cover. The purpose, It centers the seal to the crank shaft, then the cover is torqued. I had a front seal go out because of this so I had to do it again sam, Learned from my mistake :>} You just have to slip the balancer on first to align the crankshaft to the seal hole. Then torque the cover. HAVE A GOOD DAY.

Always use Felpro gaskets the ARP 302 timing cover bolt kit, The Right Stuff, Ultra Black or High Heat Orange Permatexor Aviator Gasket Sealer, or Felpro, Red High Tack, Brush On or Spray on, or Felpro Copper Sealer Tube or Spray.

Nice video. I like your attitude in admitting your mistake; it is exemplary. I missed the part about closing up the timing cover in the earlier vid and now I know why. I was really looking for experience with an earlier stock 302 timing cover removal/install bbut the quality production here helps anyway. Thanks

The happy stuff for timing covers, water pumps, and thermostat housings is Ultra gray. Assemble, snug bolts but do not tighten, wait 1 hour and then torque.

I had to redo my timing cover gasket on my F150 302 at 90, 000 (coolant leak) and again at 330, 000 (coolant leak and A fresh timing chain and gears). Used paper gasket covered with a light film of silicone around the coolant passages. Always put the gasket on the block with the line up sleeves in the block. Replaced the oil pan gasket the first time. Just loosened the front 6 pan bolts and silicone at the corners the second time.

Great vid, thanks! Working on my Jeep and I got a lot of good info here, technique-wise.

Thanks for sharing that, sh!t happens ! You have BIGGER problems, however. We learn from experience. Plastic becomes brittle with age, and will fail you. I too, once trusted those plastic oil pressure gauge lines. By the time you find the leak/failure, it is too late. The engine has been damaged. Spend $5.- bucks on some 1/8" refrigeration copper line. While you are at it, do your air shocks too. I have had both of these fail. Shocks still leak? Try some soapy water around the welds on the top/bottom with air in the shock absorber, there isn't any quality control anymore. Eventually, we learn, and correct these avoidable mistakes.

It would be nice if you would put the Engine type/size in the description as well

OTC has Ford tools. Goodson has engine tools and valve seal tools. Goodson has a crank turner socket. E-Bay has Snap-on scanners and adapters and cartridges and manuals. Get the 120 volt adapter to check test results off the car. Use Clothesline to lock the engine and to replace valve seals. Feed the clothesline thru a soda straw into the cylinder. Get a damper installer.

Any time you're replacing something on your engine that requires a gasket, everything has to be surgically clean. Scrape all old gasket material off, use a solvent to remove any and all fluids, oils, or residues. You can't be too clean when engine building.

I dont use gaskets on the timing cover or water pump just the black rtv, those damn paperishh gaskets suck and are pointless. Just like the cork lower intake gaskets they sell. The blue rubber ones are the best for intake, oil pan, and valve covers. Anyways i love the balancer looks badass!

I would recommend you get a copper oil pressure line, I've had experience with the plastic ones blowing out in hot weather.

You aren't the first and you won't be the last. If I had a nickel for every time I did something like that I'd have a lot of extra change!

I think you're also supposed to put several beads of RTV at the area where the cover meets at the oil pan gasket?

Did you ever get around to Dyno-ing this engine? Planning on following your guide for my donor explorer engine with gt40p heads. It's going in a 67 coupe, and I'm just curious how everything turned out.
