I mean im the type of guy to change strings only when they break but i also break a lot of strings so it balances out

About the gunk, all you have to do is apply lemon oil and pass a cloth everytime you're done playing (i use glasses cloth) above AND underneath the strings.. the result is no gunk and long lasting strings, which i haven't changed in more than 5 months, and I busk/play outdoors at day and night.

I knew a guy who had the same strings that came with the guitar when he bought it... 8 years earlier. I offered to change them and his response was "you're supposed to change them?" Uh.. yeah... eventually.

I'm more of a Doom metal player and I'm always looking to chase a good Bite out of my Bass tone and I love the booming wooly tone that older strings give me on my guitar. As a result I change my bass strings when they start looking or sounding dull but I play the dog shit out of my guitar strings until they Muddy up then they don't get changed until they tarnish or feel brittle and dead.

I changed my acoustic guitar strings last week, and I’ve only had my electric guitar for about 2 weeks. I also started a ‘maintenance log’ for both of them to keep track any modifications and maintenance upkeep.

Really depends for me on whether I’m gigging or just practicing. If I’m gigging, I’ll change them before a weekend of gigs, but if I’m practicing I’ll just leave them as long as possible lol

If you get good coated strings you don't have to change them often. And with the coating technology these days they still sound great, feel great, and last ages. Highly recommend D'addario XS.
