Being able to squat is also super convenient for when you just really need to sit in public. I have a form of tachycardia that gets worse the longer I stand so catch me squatting in long lines at stores haha

But squatting isn’t just about the position of your body, it’s about being strong/flexible enough to HOLD the position. So sitting on a chair/couch/toilet with your feet on a stool is probably better than nothing, but a lot of the benefits are because it strengthens your legs/glutes/core and increases balance and stability specifically because you’re NOT sitting on something.

Like if you’re doing wall sits, it isn’t the same as sitting in a chair. The whole point of it is to strengthen your legs/glutes/core by NOT supporting your weight.

Sitting unsupported on the floor is similar. You need a strong core to be able to hold yourself upright like that comfortably without back support.

I would argue that it isn’t about sitting vs squatting in itself, but rather that people who can squat comfortably also have better flexibility/strength, probably a healthier weight, etc., so they have a better/longer quality of life.

I am 45 years old and squat down like that all the time, and stand right back up. When I'm pulling weeds in my garden, when I'm playing with my grandbabies, trying to light the fire pit in my backyards. There are tons of times I do it without even thinking about it until I've heard people talking about how it's unusual at an older age. I can do a inverted criss cross apple sauce legs where my feet are on the top instead of the bottom too. I don't feel like I'm more healthy though so I don't think that says anything except that you are flexible.

I googled "Slav squat" and when I saw a picture of the position, both of my knees spontaneously exploded.

Had a Russian friend and he would always squat, even on chairs, so I tested it out and started doing it too. I find the deep squat very comfortable position to be in.

In Australia we have some toilets (usually along the freeway) called “long drops” which is just big holes in the ground with a toilet on top and sometimes with no toilet. Makes car trips memorable lol

When I was 10 years younger and work at Subway. Squatting down to get into the safe was so relaxing. It felt so good. It doesn’t feel so good now.

You really don't want to be known as the office farter. My first day as a nurse at a new hospital they told me to watch out for Kathy because she would hot box the med room. It's been years since I've worked there but I'll never forget that comment😂

The key thing is to keep the feet flat on the floor. Most Americans don't havd the ankle/hip mobility to get in to that position, and they'll default to squating with their heels raised and balancing on their toes. The more you work on getting your feet flat on ground, the greater the benefit of the position.

35 weeks pregnant and yeah, them slav squats are the bee's knees for opening things up and relieving back pain. Better than a yoga ball chair and free!
