Ear infections: the 2 main types

Broadly speaking, there are 2 main types of ear infections.

Those that occur in the ear canal (otitis externa) and those that occur behind the eardrum (the middle ear). Both are common in adults and kids and have different features. In this video, we delve deeper into each one of these.
They're a staple of general practice and I usually see one of these every clinic.

Both cause discomfort and decreased hearing with otitis external also being associated with fever, a smelly discharge and feeling more unwell.

It can be difficult to know whether you or your child needs to see a doctor when you have earache. Always consult one if:

You become suddenly more unwell
If the illness seems severe
It doesn't get better after 3 days
If the temperature is persistently raised
There are symptoms that you’re not sure about

Currently dealing with otitis externa and it is so painful, I was crying in the doctors office waiting to be seen because I needed antibiotic ear drops and pain relief. Still working on getting it to stop hurting.

Thank you Dr. Sinan. I had my first ear infection at age 20. Since that time I have had at least one ear infection each year. So far, I have had about 9 and its ALWAYS in my left ear. Since the eyes, ears nose and throat are connected, could allergies cause an ear infection? I usually sleep on my left side. Thank you so much for sharing this great information. ❤❤❤

Good information...iv had tubes four times...iv suffered in agony for extended periods with infection...born with deformed eustachian tubes from the get go....haven't had troubles though since I was 12...I'm 40 now...and for 4 weeks now iv had a clogged left ear..double delayed noises..discharge everyday..Total daily discomfort....if you have never experienced this?....then your blessed..but I'm here to tell you it's life altering in ways simple as how you comprehend what someone says to you..even if you can hear them....thanks again for the info..good video.

This is the best explanation I've seen. I think I've got an outter infection based on the symptoms. No fever etc. But the pain is terrible to touch and is full. . On day one so far Saturday. If still here by Monday I'll ask the pharmacist (uk) for some drops. It's a nightmare the human body.

ive been battling ear problems for 7 weeks! Symptoms are vertigo feeling ill and tinnitus and loss of hearing and full feeling im on anti sickness tablets and tablets for the dizziness, got no pain though

5:16 if you go swimming or whatever gets your ears wet what I like to do (with someone who dosent have a lot of earwax) is I just lay on a pillow like half up for about 5 mins or less. Works every time

Ugh. I wish I had a dr give me ear drops for the middle ear infection I had. All they kept giving me is antibiotic pills. Nothing directly for the infection itself. :(
