Note, this only works on aluminum gum wrappers. If you want a scientific explanation to this, the gum wrapper is made of aluminum which conducts electrical current. The wrapper touching both ends of the battery creates a short circuit thus causing a fire when both “ends” of the gum wrapper are touched. Furthermore, the wax on the gum wrapper adds additional flammability.
