I'd like to understand how this happened, as I'm sure many others would too. I also like to assume good will unless the contrary is clearly demonstrated. In the spirit, I have a theory that I'd love to hear your opinion on (and, I haven't heard this elsewhere). Could World War II have played a part? The mood in the late 1950s and early 1960s -- and of course continuing to today -- is one of extreme sympathy for the suffering of the Jews at the hands of the Nazis -- of course, such sympathy is absolutely justified! In that intellectual environment, might it have seemed harsh to say that all Jews, unless they convert, will not be saved? I wonder if that was a big part of the ecumenical push, that then expanded outward to other groups. (Of course, the answer is, these concerns are and should be logically separated.)
