Rather than depression, I could see this as a mechanism to kill off adult flies after they have reproduced, say, in times of famine or harsh environmental conditions, thus potentially giving younger and more evolutionarily fit flies a greater chance at survival. Seeing the dead bodies might be a signal that times are bad.

I'm glad it is not the other way around, otherwise, Bryan Johnson would be found raiding mourges.

Wouldn't you quite easily be able to check if people who work with dead bodies (and thus, see more dead bodies) die earlier?
