Foot or Shin? Roundhouse Kick with Which Part of the Leg?

Martial arts styles sometimes contradict each other -- in this case: which part should you strike with when throwing a roundhouse kick? The shin or the foot? Muay Thai preaches the shin, while Taekwondo utilizes the top of the foot or the "instep". I believe you should use all limbs and weapons in your arsenal.

That totally makes sense. Actually the more I watch your videos, the more Soccer appears to be a great conditionning sport. It's way more hardcore for cardio than footing or biking, like you can't even dare comparing. For cardio, for the footwork, for kicking with both feet, for headers (headers = neck and headskull conditionning...), for positionning, it seems extraordinary complementary with fight conditioning. When your able to kick over 60 mph with both feet and run 2*45minutes you're quite a animal already

Awesome explaining video! Unfortunately I can do muay Thai for at least 6 months. I have stress fractures from running so much and getting no rest :/ still doing boxing and never the less these videos are super helpful!

I choose to use foot over shin is because I'm scared of using my shin.
perhaps that I've just seen too much injuries where the shin snaps in two(mostly videos but I've seen a couple irl) and I'm terrified of it happening to me and I believe a long bone injury such as the shin is much worse than a foot injury since I've actually experienced a handful of those.

Jeez dude, them damm kicks you threw had a snap to them. Your fluidity is amazing Shane.

Besides roundhouse kicking with the foot and the shin, I've also learned from my ITF class that we can kick with the ball of our foot for smaller target. That part is not that hard as skull, but with good targeting, believe some damage can be done to the opponent too.

I usually kick with the instep, it has more range and just feels more natural to me. I find it hard to get any power in the kick if I try using the shin

Why do i feel like I'll snap my shin like silva if I use it

Great points and a very insightful video Shane. I've been taught both methods but never on the finer points and details. I like how you basically boiled it down to range. Makes so much more sense to me now! Thank you!

Good stuff Shane! I grew up with taekwondo but never really conditioned my feet. Been getting back at the bag with your videos and others for tips. The shin feels a lot more useful and natural to impact on, to me.

Only kick hard when you are positive of your range. I almost completely snapped an ankle ligament because i went for a low kick and my opponent stepped back, so i ended up hitting with the foot. Mind your distance fellas, or get ready for some nasty pt hahaha. Great content Shane, cheers from brazil!

Where I studied Taekwondo they told us to use the ball of the foot. The ball of the foot has a smaller hitting area and can take more impact. Just be sure to pull back the toes. I believe Savate also hits like this.

I'm kyokushin karate practitioner. I think if you want to kick to the head kick with a foot because you can hit highter and snap kick is very accurate but if you want to the legs or ribs kick with the shin.
