Points of Contact for Roundhouse Kicks: Anatomy of the Shin

preview_player

With the popularity of Muay Thai in MMA, we are taught to throw and block roundhouse kicks with our shins... but the "shin bone" or tibia is a huge bone, that varies in size and shape. Shane discusses the different points of contact best for striking and checking.

3:12 is something my coach has always preached. A lot of these bad shin breaks happen because someone throws a kick without any setup and especially skilled fighters can see it coming and just check it and you're going to pay the price. Rare to see kicks without setup in a MT fight though.

My blind ass thought the shin outline was carefully edited in and I was like "holy shit Shane, good job" then I realized it was just drawn on. Still a great video though.

How Bas Rutten explained the Silva-Weidman incident was comparing the shin bone to a ruler. A ruler has a flat surface (where all the numbers are) and the side. Snapping a ruler in half is easy when applying pressure to the "surface" part, and almost impossible with the "side" part.

The shin bone is similar in that our "flat surface" is along the side our of shin, while the "side" is at the center - where we usually get bruises from bag work. Silva threw an inside leg kick - that if not done properly (or for speed purposes), does not make impact with the "side" part of the bone, but with the "surface". That, coupled with Weidman who's been practicing checking kicks with his knees (after eating a lot of leg kicks the first fight), caused the snap. At least that's how I understood Bas' explanation.

I'm always worried when i'm throwing leg kicks due watching people breaking their legs when they kick, thanks for this video, it helped a lot !

For many years as a child I was kicking people with my feett, it hurt like hell but I thought it would get tougher, then I saw a slow motion replay of someone kicking with their shin.. I tried it and I couldn't believe the difference! Thanks so much for the lesson!

Awesome, a video that makes my fear of fighting without shin guards even worse! Lol.

The transition between the tibia and the ankle is really the sweet spot, or at least where i feel less pain.

Thank you. So many "how to Thai roundhouse kick" vids, but very few speaking to the anatomy and target area of the kick.

hey shane you have a great channel and solid information, the thing I don't like is that your videos are really short and you don't go deep on the topics you talk about
other than that you're awesome keep up the good work !
