How to ask, "Do you speak English?" in Japanese.

Eigo o hanase masuka?

Eigo o hanase masuka?

Eigo o hanase masuka?

"Eigo" is "English", "o hanase masuka," "do you speak."

You can also ask, "Do you understand English?"

Eigo wakari masuka?

"Eigo," again "English," "do you understand," "wakari masuka."

Let's try it.

Eigo wakari masuka?

One more time.

Eigo wakari masuka?

Good.

And that's how you say, "Do you speak English?" in Japanese.

Random fact for people viewing this who are trying to learn Japanese: when you see words that say something like desu you can drop the u and say it as des so when you’re introducing yourself you can say des which is basically saying I am

Just a correction, "o" is a particle which means that "English" is the object of the sentence.

Okay, so if Eigo o hanase masuka is "Do you speak English?". Would Nihongo o hanase masuka be "Do you speak Japanese?"

So in this example "English" is the object, "you" is the subject, and "speak" is the verb? Because "wo" is an object marker. So that's the only way this can make sense. Except that "you" has been omitted. So "speak" is acting upon "English", as Japanese reads backwards, technically, which would make "speak" the subject. Man.
