GRAND MERCI à M. Maarethyu pour cette mise en ligne. Thomas Hengelbrock conduit parfaitement cette sublime symphonie de Brahms. Peut-être lui reprochera-t-on un 3ème mouvement trop rapide, voire sec? Par contre les trois autres sont parfaits, avec surtout un quatrième mouvement magistral tant dans le fond que dans la forme. Un GRAND BRAVO à lui, en espérant le voir/entendre vite à Paris.

Love the orchestra layout with basses at the back and timps just in front, between trumpets and horns. And with the opening chords from the alternate version on the Chailly/Leipzig set!

Interesting voicings at cadences, several spots where the something other than the tonic pitch stands out. I've heard this symphony hundreds of times and I am hear new things here.

Warum nur hat Brahms die ersten Takte seiner vierten Symphonie damals gestrichen?
Wie ein Vorhang im magischen Theater öffnete sich die Musik langsam, um uns behutsam in das Zauberreich seines letzten Orchesterwerkes eintreten zu lassen.
Zum Glück haben das NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester und Thomas Hengelbrock dieses kleine Wunder wieder für uns hörbar gemacht.

Hengelbrock has trouble controling the ritardandi in the first movement but gets better later.

And, like every conductor from Furtwangler to Toscanini, both Kleibers, Karajan, Solti, Lenny, whatever pretty boy or girl is up there now...

the piece is played wrong. Can't stand it.
