Like Karl Böhm said, when he has heard, that Furtwängler died: Who can conduct now the 4th Symphony of Brahms?

This recording changed my life when it was published 1960. Soo important!

I first heard this piece as a young 17-year-old cellist about to graduate from high school. I had begun cello studies as a freshman and already knew that I wanted music to be my life. After discovering this very recording in my dad's collection of LP's my life completely changed. I went on the major in cello performance in college and made a career in music. The 2nd movement leaves me speechless.

There are many, many recordings of this work, but Furtwangler’s interpretation is like no other. So much musicality, intensity and so much pathos. This recording stands above all others. A miracle of a performance!

Very good example of Furtwängler's art in his own repertoiry with his own orchestra. A milestone!

There is in this piece a fugue of distinct sets of emotions. For instance the heroic in fugue with a lush sensuousness.

Brahms is difficult and modern performances are much better. I don't think Furtwangler respected the ' rhythmic precision that Brahms demands; at points it dissolves into some sort of romantic goo.
