Information about the piece:
Brahms began working on his last symphony in 1884, just a year after completing his Symphony no.3, and completed in 1885.
It was first performed to a small private audience in a version for two pianos, played by Brahms and Ignaz Brüll. The official premiere of the symphony though, occured in Meiningen, on October 25, 1885 with Brahms conducting the piece himeslf.

The Brahms E minor symphony was once described as "a deep dark well; the longer one gazes into it, the more one sees."

Carlos Kleiber was amongst Brahms greatest interpreters; and the VPO — well, they can play Brahms' "autumn symphony" in their sleep. A truly magnificent performance.

The inclusion of trombones in the final movement adds such power and solemnity. Masterpiece.

2:31 and 9:41 are some of the most striking harmonies in this piece and I can't get enough of them.

This Symphony deserves a nickname! Since the Finale is a literal Passacaglia (a piece containing variations on a short, continuously repeating bass-ostinato) and since Beethoven’s Ninth (and last) Symphony is called “Choral” because its finale, which contains Ode To Joy, is a cantata-like piece, this one (Brahms’ own last symphony) should be called “The Passacaglia Symphony”.
