Valheim
----------------------------
A battle-slain warrior, the Valkyries have ferried your soul to Valheim, the tenth Norse world. Besieged by creatures of chaos and ancient enemies of the gods, you are the newest custodian of the primordial purgatory, tasked with slaying Odin’s ancient rivals and bringing order to Valheim.

Your trials begin at the disarmingly peaceful centre of Valheim, but the gods reward the brave and glory awaits. Venture forth through imposing forests and snow-capped mountains, explore and harvest more valuable materials to craft deadlier weapons, sturdier armor, viking strongholds and outposts. Build a mighty longship and sail the great oceans in search of exotic lands … but be wary of sailing too far...

The most important thing is to put main base directly near the ocean, so you can bring back home iron, silver, etc. Just create some temporary storage base near by ocean while mining, so you can bring back iron, etc. Use portal to travel back and forth to your home base

It really does depend on your seed. As a rule, my first base is setup near a black forest just to get my bronze armour to rank 3 (or troll hide, but not much point going for both), shield to rank 3, and weapons. I make sure to get a finewood bow (best troll killer early on) and stagbreaker (great for crypts in forest and swamps). Once I have enough I break everything down, leaving only a portal near the stones, and some chests of mats, and then i set off in a boat.

At this point what i'm trying to find is an island containing both a large mountain and a large swamp, and I take my time doing this. Most new players will hit a bit of a wall when dealing with the swamp, as it will usually involve their first boat expedition and it can be hard to find a good size biome: a lot of players won't even know that they need sunken crypts for iron, and that the large biomes will give you the most of these. There are a lot of swamp biomes that don't contain any crypts. On the other hand a big mountain is kind of obvious from a distance. Hopefully there will also be some meadows or black forest too, as this is where i will build my permanent base.

I tend not to worry about plains too much as by this stage it is no trouble to setup a new temp base, or just ferry stuff on a boat; but again it depends on the seed and distance to a good sized biome.

Finally a quick protip: This game requires you to get a lot of wood, for building and for coal. The tip from other viewers about leaving a portal near your starting stones is a good one, not just for turning in boss kills, but so that you can quickly swap to the Elder ability and go mad chopping trees for 5 minutes. Doing this can get you 8 to 10 stacks of wood to portal back with no problems. This is far better than chopping down 50 wood at a time near your base now and then, which gets tedious quite quickly.

So yeah, if you are a new player don't be fixated on building a base as soon as you start. Sometimes I don't even start building until about day 10, as i go around getting as much meat, neck tails deer hides and trophies, leather, raspberries and queen bees as possible, which i temp store inside the chests within derelict buildings. Just keep 5 stone and a stack of wood on you so you can repair and setup a campfire to cook and get rested buff. There really isn't anything that can kill you in the Meadows - drowning is probably your biggest risk lol, or maybe a 2 star boar during the night cycle.

Their are “Bases” and then their are “Outposts”. Bases often bigger has more workbench resources built to craft or forge stuff. Outpost is just a relay station, portal location to field operate from but no crafting there. That said:
1. 1st Base was found an built from an abandoned village on very edge of Black Forest/Meadows area. Was next to Sea. Copper nearby too.
2. 2nd Base took a lot of effort and exploration to find. But it’s a Private Island 🏝 triangulated between 3 big islands of ALL the Biomes. Thus easy to see all 3 islands as well get to them by sea to transport stuff. Main reason for the relocation is logistics of metal transport.

I would actually recommend building close to your starting circle (like just outside the mystical forcefield close). There's always 2 raspberries and 2 mushrooms hidden behind the starting stones and this is actually quite decent as a poor man's farm to start out.

In the long run, you'll want to have a portal at the starting stones so you can quickly swap between the 5 forsaken powers, so you might as well make it look good now. Just keep it small and functional and it will serve you well throughout the game.

The most important factor for a base is ocean access. The more ores you can easily get to your base at a time the better, trying to place your base inbetween biomes will almost certainly put you away from the water meaning you have to rely on the cart or on whatever you can carry. A cart may have as many slots as the longship but you can't drag a full cart of ore.

Gosh, this is SO helpful. Just started with a buddy and during downtime, I'm exploring on my solo seed... I knew there were multiple biomes and I just don't know how to position myself knowing that this is different from Minecraft. I love that it's not spoiling anything in the game like all other beginner videos out there. This is very much appreciated~

I'm not sure if you've made a video about this, but, a great exploration strategy is super important to even find where these biomes are so that you can set up your base in the best place.

As a follow up you could discuss some efficient base designs. For example, I saw a video where a guy stacked the charcoal kiln on top of the smelter. The fact that you can make plant and tree farms far away since plants grow while unloaded while boars and wolves will not breed while unloaded.

IMO
- Base one (small temporary) should be close to the spawn point, you always come back here with the heads of the bosses.
- Base 2 should be near your copper nodes and on water as tin is typically close, if you can be a short boat ride to a good swamp, do it!

- Base 3 may be near silver or you can continue to use Base 2, it rally depends on how well you chose Base 2.
- Plains base should be on meadows or Black Forest, but beside the plains. For the garden, find a tiny island and drop work benches to prevent spawns then use it for your farm.

My starting biome on our first group server was a massive Meadow and nothing else. There were rivers on either side that were too wide to swim without good food or a high swimming skill (we rafted it) and the other two sides were ocean. It wasn't until 200+ hours in the game, almost exclusively on this server, that I realized how (seemingly) incredibly rare this was,

What I did was make my main base near the sacrificial stones. It has a centralized item storage system separated by biomes, and corridors that lead to portals of same biomes grouped together.

Also a good idea to have high ground near the shore. You need high ground for boar and tree farming, and the shore for travel.

I think of those derelict buildings as a work shack to start the actual base.

A quite excellent primer on the logistics in this game I like so much. Logistics that can be altered very successfully with more players...as long as an accepted designation and duties can be assigned. Thinking from the port that's stinking is fun too though (as long as there's a good renewal policy)!

Um many of the small mountains don't have silver and many of the small swamps don't have crypts. The world generates outward, so to progress you usually have to travel to outer islands from the first to find large enough biomes with those resources, or islands with the biomes at all. The devs made it this way to force boat travel in the game.

Great video on the more strategic thought process of the game.

I think I’d prefer to take all this points in but add by building into beside the sea.

My Offtopic (SORTA) advice : ALSO play it with friends, on "private" with a password? IF you diversify your characters, you'll have a span of damage types (i.e. Ice Arrows, Poison Spear, Fire axe etc etc).
