Είμαι Ελληνοαυστραλός. Όταν ήμουν παιδί, την μεγάλη εβδομάδα, έκανα νηστεία στην Μελβούρνη και μετά τα παράτησα. Ξανά άρχισα να νηστεύω πρίν 20 χρόνια, κάθε Πάσχα και Χριστούγεννα.

Many people who are active in the Orthodox Church in America follow the fasting traditions of our Church, and this includes people who join the church by conversion. It would be interesting to interview Athenian leaving church after a liturgy to see if the responses vary.

Very interesting, I didn't know that tradition. Here in Brazil, some Catholic people don't eat meat, but eat fish instead. Αlso, in the neighborhood I live in, they make some sort of bread that contains coconut, it's very good. I don't have any tradition, but I like eating fish and that bread on these days, hehe.

Σαν έναν μουσουλμάνο εγώ κρατάω την παράδοση μου. Νηστεύω κατά τη διάρκεια των 30 ημερών. Η δική μας νηστεία είναι λίγο διαφορετική. Εμείς δεν τρώμε και πίνουμε τίποτα 17ωρες. Ξεκινάμε να νηστεύουμε στις 03.00-04.00 πμ και τη τελειώνουμε στις 20.00-21.00 μμ. Δυσκολευόμαστε μα προσπαθούμε να νυστεψουμε. Ελπίζω να δεχθεί τις νιστειες μας ο θεός 🙏🙏🙏

Lent is 40 days, but the total fast lasts for 50 days. Lent technically ends the Friday before Lazarus Saturday, Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday are two separate stand-alone fast days, then the Holy Week fast lasts from Monday until the Paschal Service at midnight on Saturday. There's also the Fast of the Dormition for the first two weeks in August that was mentioned in the video and the Fast of the Apostles following Pentecostal and the Advent Fast for the 40 days before Christmas which were not. There are also three more stand-alone one-day fasts on the Eve of Theophany, the Exaltation of the Cross, and the Beheading of John the Baptist. Plus, of course, the standard fasting every Wednesday and Friday (with a few exceptions).

Για όσους φίλους μας μαθαίνουν ελληνικά, η λέξη "νηστεία" προέρχεται από το "νη" (=μη) + "εσθίω" (= τρώω), των αρχαίων ελληνικών.

For those friends who are learning Greek, here is a piece of trivia. The word "νηστεία" (fast), comes from the ancient Greek words (νη + εσθίω) (not + eating).

Πολύ ενδιαφέρον και επίσης καλώς καμωμένο! Εγώ νηστέυω, παρόλο που δεν είμαι ορθόδοξος, είμαι καθολικός και μόνο σπάνια έχω στην εκκλησία. Δεν τρώω κρέας και γλυκά τεσσερακοντα(?) (40) ημέρας.
Edit: Αλλά δεν αλήθεια νηστέυω για λόγοι θρησκευτικοί, αλλά για υγεία μου και όλου κόσμου για κλιματικής αλλαγής και, σημαντικότερο, για απόδειξη προ εαυτό μού ότι δύναμαι να μαγειρεύω και τρώω εντελώς χωρίς κρέας και γλυκά. Μού επίσης αρέσει, ότι αυτά θα δοκιμάσω πιο καλύτερα ύστερα!😁😋

I'm not Christian but I do celebrate my name-day :D It doesn't make any sense really. I don't even believe that there ever was a saint going by the name of Janusz :D But I try to convince my wife to buy me a present :D We also meet at Christmas but it is just a family meeting with no religious symbols, thoughts or traditions. I also would exclaim: "Jesus Christ!" when I get angry at something. But I don't even believe that somebody going by this name ever existed :D (by the way: the idea of being a son of a God is so much Greek :D Just like Hercule and so many other Greek semi-gods :D ) So it is not really religious.
