Graphene strikes again, the wonder material of the 21st century, I just hope it doesn't turn out that it's as bad as Radium or asbestos or something... :P

There is an Australian company called Ellume that has an emergency use authorisation from the FDA for a home covid test using nanoparticles. Test results in 15min to your phone via an app with 100% specificity and 96% sensitivity for symptomatic patients and 96% specificity and 91% sensitivity for asymptomatic patients. Product is being manufactured and shipped.

Was it mentioned what type of sample will taken to be tested by these chips?....is it taken from the nose, mouth or blood sample?

There is a Brisbane based detection kit that has just been approved for use self testing at home in the US that provides results in 20 mins and sells for $20 to $30, according to the Australian news. It connects and tests using a mobile phone.

It sounds like it could be the new Gold Standard of testing! 😁 🖖

The fact that the researchers alluded to a single chip costing around $10 means that mass production at high volumes would drive the price down to the point where anyone could afford it. And, in the grand scheme of sensors already in laptops and smartphones, the addition would be miniscule and minimally impactful.

Two things in the back of my mind however: 1) does this chip have a biological lifespan, just as the graphene and gold have mechanical/electrical lifespans, and would replacement be frequent? 2) how confident are we in the ability of the test/chip removing patient/subject bias in the case of self-administration?

Love research. Science is awesome! Happy holidays everyone

It's really cool how this tech can be generalised to other diseases too. Necessity is the mother of innovation.

When they claim it can be sold for $10, Add at least one 0 to that if you live in america

4:00 Only $10? Give it to the American healthcare system and watch it become $1000 overnight.

You didn't say what the sample was: spit, blood, urine, spinal fluid -- what? That makes a big difference to the new tech's ease of use.

I must say, these quick- tests were very easy to use and also quite accurate. In my country, 2 weekends of country wide testing were organized. I was tasked as being one of the people who conducted the tests. It told us pretty quickly if someone was positive and also people came in and out in about 5-10 min so it was also very quick and convenient for the people getting tested.

I do rapid covid testing for my place of work and we use similar chips that we insert into a machine and place the sample in the chip. The test we run takes about 10 minutes though, so I wonder how exactly the chips differ.
