SpaceX Starship Booster Upgrade After Static Fires, Hakuto-R Moon Lander, CRS-26, & Artemis 1 Update

We have got fire again this week my friends, and how do you think the new concrete held up? The SpaceX Starship Booster Upgrade After Static Fires is needed so it has been removed from the Orbital Launch Mount on Friday. Diving right into that along with the general updates at Starbase. The incredible little Hakuto-R Moon Lander is on its way soon. Lots to learn about this one to be hurled into space by Falcon 9. We had CRS-26 sending super critical components to upgrade the International Space Station. Then Artemis 1 has Orion continuing its breath-taking journey as it prepares to head home.

Fellow Tasmanian here, and yes it is sad we have not kept up, but at the same time is is a good thing that we are finally doing what we need to do.

I was 16 years old the last time we set foot on the moon. I’ve been waiting a long time to see it happen again. Perhaps too long. I’ve been hooked on your channel now for 6 months and can’t get enough. Keep up with the amazing content!

I'm 61. My grandparents would have heard the news about the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk. My dad worked on the first IBM computers. I got to stay up way past my bedtime to watch the first moon landing live. My kids were here for the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11. I mused that they'd probably see the 100th, and wondered if we'd get back in that time. Now it appears that I'll get to see a return to the moon after all, and maybe even a manned mission to Mars. So far, so fast.

Thanks for the updates, Marcus. Keep up the good work.

You were a lifesaver during my coaching years(boarding high school)
Phones and Internet were strictly prohibited and we were only allowed 20 minutes per week before we had to give them back
You are the reason I could follow the things I love and catch up with what happened over the week
Thank You very much

Thanks @Marcus House, great weekend treat/update.

The Orion sailing WAAAY out past the Moon are particularly spooky and extremely awesome- like wading into deep water past the waves at the beach.

Can't wait to see 33 Raptors firing- the frost falling was great to see.

Disappointing we halted so quickly with space exploration.

Love all the attention with the Moon. Exciting to see the details of the Japanese lander.

Thanks for the deep dive earlier in the week too!

I just came here after watching CSI Starships Data dump Pt.1 and I feel I have so much more clarity now,
All of the parts he talked about I'm noticing in these highlights!
Amazing!

The shot of "Neil Armstrong" at 17:57 was actually Buzz Aldrin dropping down from the ladder onto the LM footpad twenty minutes after Armstrong had done the same thing. This shot, or a similar shot of Neil dropping down from the ladder are often used in clips because they have easily discernable motion, compared to the actual first step by Neil Armstrong which has little discernable motion.

Armstrong took his first step onto the surface when he stepped off the LM footpad with his left foot, placing it onto the surface as he held onto the ladder with one hand. There was only a small amount of visible movement as he took the step because the camera view only showed him from about the knees up. So all that could be seen was Armstrong shifting his body weight as his foot moved onto the surface. You then see him slightly bounce as he tests the surface. Followed by his immortal words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" (insert controversy about the missing word "a" here).

So why use a clip of Aldrin's drop from the ladder instead of Armstrong? It's because the image quality was slightly better by that point in the Moonwalk. During the first fifteen minutes or so the TV picture was alternating back and forth between the 26 meter radio antennas at the Goldstone tracking station in California and Honeysuckle Creek near Canberra, Australia. Just prior to Aldrin coming down the ladder the broadcast switched to the much superior 64 meter radio telescope at the Parkes Observatory in New South Wales, Australia. The reason that the Parkes antenna wasn't available during Neil's first step was because the Moon was just coming over the horizon there at that time.

Parkes would have been in ideal position for the first step if the Moonwalk had gone off as scheduled. However after the landing, Armstrong and Aldrin realized that they wouldn't be able to sleep prior to the Moonwalk, and felt that they would rest better after the Moonwalk. They requested that the two activities be reversed. However this put the Moonwalk six hours earlier than scheduled, which meant that the Moon would just be coming over the horizon in New South Wales when the Moonwalk began.

Very enjoyable one this week, from an Aussie expat living in California who worked for NASA here because I was frustrated with Australian lack of support for new technologies when I grew up there, after watching the moon landings as a boy.
