To convert mkv file to mp4 with vlc media player, go to media and select convert/save option.
Over here, click this plus icon and add your mkv file.

Now click this dropdown menu and select convert.
Here in the profile dropdown select mp4 format and select destination folder.
I’ll leave it to be a desktop.
Rename it and click save.
Wait for the process to finish, this depends on the size of the video and your computer.
After the conversion is done you can see your converted mp4 file.

Do you actually convert the original file or do you make a copy in a new format?

It doesn't work, it weirdly quickly converts the file and I try playing it but there is only audio but no video and I tried using different formats like H.264 but it stays the same

I do this and when i try to put it in sony vegas 14 it puts in only the audio...

Is there any way to convert it without losing the subtitles? I created a .mkv file to burn subtitles to the movie but when I convert it to .mp4 I always end up without them :(
