Mucus, or snot, may have a bad rep, but it’s actually good for your health. Mucus helps to lubricate and protect your body from infections, foreign invaders, and inflammation, so whenever you feel congested, it’s actually your body trying to protect you. There is a point, however, where mucus can signal something abnormal, and you’ll be able to tell by its color. Tune in to find out when it’s time to see a doctor and what mucus says about your health.

My mom who was a nurse would always yell "WHAT COLOR IS IT?!?" 🤣 Because "Clear is allergies, so I was "in the clear" to go to school", Yellow is a virus so no saying "hello to anyone!", and Green in a sinus infection, so suck it up, here are some antibiotics". 🤷‍♀ She was pretty straight forward that one.

Who else is watching this with a runny nose?

After recovering from COVID, I wonder if others have experienced dark yellow or even brown mucus for many days.

I am surprised that a Sinus infection or Upper Respiratory Infection were not mentioned. But these two are also possible reasons. People who get a nasty Sinus Infection, their nose will bleed and the sinus pressure is very intense. Dark brown. Mucus can be an indication of an upper respiratory infection.

Just to stop people panicking over black mucus, black mucus immediately after exploring an old loft or cellar could simply be lots of dust. If the mucus goes clear after one or two blows, it's not something to worry about.

As someone who has hay fever, I'll tell you its common to have most colours and types of mucus, even the occasional nose bleed. Sometimes i get it very severe and can hardly breathe. A day or 2 later, this constant stream of yellow and green snot follows. A load of other wierd symptoms follow along too but still feel fine to an extent. Anyone with hayfever will know what im on about

I started blowing out bright yellow mucus because of the pollen levels where I live are pretty high. I had a sore throat, and I took antibiotics. I am feeling better, and I don't have to blow my nose anymore.

Fun fact: your stomach produces a new layer of mucus every week otherwise it'll digest itself

Excess mucus that cannot be stopped is similiar to drowning. Nose is constantly clogged and drainage in the back of your throat is so severe you cannot get enough oxygen. Big gulp, take a breath, big gulp, take a breath. Result of food allergies, environmental hazards and sinus infections.

I'm a former heroin addict and I used to snort it in my right nostril. Now I am having so much problem with mucus, that's always hardening and causing me to have blockage and sometimes I cough it out in large brown-green chunks. I haven't started worrying until I started having nose bleeds.

If your snot is white while you're sick, is that a good sign as to whether or not you're getting over your illness? In other words, if your mucus has been white for a few days and then it becomes clear again, does that mean your infection is going away?

In my primary school days I found kids who constantly blew their nose a bit weird/gross but now after the pandemic, I am quite frequently blowing my nose. Like after every school lesson to make sure I don't sniff during class

Funny, when I go to the doctor for a check up on having constant mucus, they tell me it's just allergies and just give me citrizen and kick me out basically. Had this for 2-3 years already and I have it everyday, if its allergies I'm genuinely wondering what it could be

One winter a few years ago, I was concerned after seeing black streaks in my mucus after blowing my nose; although, I didn't feel sick at the time. It cleared up after about an hour or two. The next morning it happened again.
Eventually, I realized it was due to my liquid eyeliner I was using. I came to this conclusion because I noticed it only happened on the mornings in which I accidentally flooded my eye with my liquid eyeliner when I was in a rush. I have since switched to using an eyeliner pencil and nolonger have black mucus.
