My MIL lived with us for a year when our second child was born. It was fine for a while, and we got along fine, but we needed our own space. One day, my wife took her apartment hunting and found her a place.

I turned 77 years old June 25th and I have lived alone on a fixed income since my husband died 16 years ago. I have a daughter who is 55 years old and I live about 500 miles from her. She begs me to at least move to the same city where she lives but I live in Nashville and I love it here and she lives in Akron, Ohio and I do NOT love it there. So here I stay. The difference is that I have never asked her for a cent and I cannot imagine any set of circumstances so dire that I would do so.

It is not up to my daughter to take care of me. I would rather we love each other from a distance than dislike, resent and possibly grow to actually hate each other up close and personal. I also would rather stay here and have her wish I lived closer to her than move next door to her and have her wish I were further away. I do not understand people whose total retirement plan seems to be "I'll let my children take care of me." No, no, no, no, no and NO.

It's one thing to honor your parents, another thing entirely to allow them to continue taking advantage of your generosity at the expense of your future. A truly caring, self-sacrificing parent would put themselves out on the street before they would do that.

A single mother or father could raise 6 children by themselves but when they get old 6 children can't take care of them. It's a shame that people have become so selfish and blind in chasing money. They all should take turn and take care of elderly mother instead of leaving her in nursing or old age home with strangers.

My Mom is very manipulating. My last straw...
She threatened me with a restraining order because I disagreed with how she treated my brother & traumatized his children. I don't need a judge to tell me to stay away from her. I'm done. I don't hate her, she's my mom. It hurts that I'll never have the relationship I want. My life is a lot less complicated/ drama, without her in it.
