This is just a note to thank you for your online math instruction. I am 77 years old and never did well in math in school (Public Schools 1950s and 60s). Your clear cut explanations, especially basic 'how to get started' solving problems (PEMDAS) opened doors to me that I thought were closed.

I converted 5/80 to 1/16 and then to 2/32 and added it to 7/32, which = 9/32

I just noticed that 8*4 = 32. Thus I expanded both terms: 7/32 -> 70/320 and 5/80 -> 20/320. Adding them resulted to 90/320 then dividing by 10 I got 9/32. Didn't take me 30 secs without using a calculator.

9/32!! :) ( 5/80 = 1/16 = 2/32; 7/32 + 2/32 = 9/32 .... Fast & Easy!! ;) )

Took about 5 seconds in my head while playing a game.

I got 9/32.

I went by multiplying the denominator to get 56/256+16/256, which equals 72/256. Then I divided the result by 8 to get my answer.

i learned that before looking for the LCD always see if you can reduce the fractions so after struggling a bit dividing 80 by 5 (yeah i know) i got to 1 /16 and then it was obvious. But i don't remember ever learning the bow tie method so that was interesting to learn.

John, could you please answer the following math problem? What is 6 ➗ 2(1+2) ?

Takes almost 20 minutes to show us how to add this in 30 seconds... 🙂

Took me a minute to work out a common denominator 160 then it’s 35/160 + 10/160=45/160 which equals 9/32 ( dividing by 5 )

How would the "bow-tie" method work with more than two fractions?

MEANS AND EXTREMES. First reduce, then do means and extremes.

10 seconds on calculator - but I think that's cheating (7/32)+(5/80)=

bring in to 320ś as the 7 and 5 seems a bit too hard to bring it down. Eh my first perception.

I am slow on mathematics and your video

5/80 is 1/16 then convert that to 32's so its (7+2)/32

I added the fractions mentally in about 4 seconds, so I guess this video (which I won't watch) shows an unnecessarily long method.

Unfortunately in 19, 5 minutes You told us…Answer is only 0, 5 minute.

Why would you make the second fraction something that can so easily be expressed with the same denominator as the first fraction, if that wasn't going to be the point of the lesson???

This should have been an "Add in 5 seconds" video, or else you should have used different numbers.

Solution in 3 seconds...not 30.
My reasoning confirm the description by warbierab2955,
