Learn how to add two mixed numbers with unlike denominators

👉 Learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers. Mixed numbers are numbers with two parts: the whole number part and the fraction part. Mixed numbers are ways to represent improper fractions using proper fractions.

To add or subtract mixed numbers, we first convert the mixed numbers to improper fractions by multiplying the whole number with the denominator and adding the result to the numerator, this becomes the new numerator and we retain the original denominator. After we have converted the mixed numbers to improper fraction we can now add or subtract the fractions.

Alternatively, we can split the mixed numbers and add the whole number parts separately and the fraction parts separately and then join the results.

Watching this because my nephew needs help with his homework. I'm watching in the bathroom right now. In a sec, I'll go out there and make myself look smart in front of him. Wish me luck.

I have a simpler way of doing this (mental computation without wring on the board). Just focus on the fractions 1/4 and 2/3 and convert them to their LCD (least common denominator) equivalent, 3/12 and 8/12, respectively. Now proceed with addition of the whole numbers 5 + 2 = 7 then followed by the fractions 3/12 + 8/12 = 11/12, Finally, combine the two results —> 7 11/12.

Dude! Simply find a common denominator of your fractions! Leave the whole numbers alone until you go to add them together. You're doing it the hard way.

I cannot thank you enough for these videos. I am not a math major and I have to take my OGET exam to teach soon! This really helps me brush up on my old math skills!

I’m a homeschool mom, my daughter is only 5 years old and currently just working on simple addition! But math from 5th grade onwards wasn’t my strength…so I’m trying to re-learn math from 5th grade to algebra 2 and geometry. Not all at once but just during free times. I actually feel much more confident. I did some by myself and realized I could do it! My daughter will have other resources like YouTube for help. It’s just nice to use technology for the betterment of our children’s education and future. Maybe I won’t hate math anymore and it will encourage my daughter if she grows to hate it, hopefully it comes easy to her!

This was straight to the point and very easy to show my daughter. I am also fortunate that you had shown how to convert the answer back to a whole number mixed fraction. Fantastic video and teaching!!

Me: omg i forgot to thank covid for taking all my brain cells

My mom:you forgot simple math

Me: yup

Dad: u learnt that in elementary school
Me: oh yeah I forgot

There is much simpler way: Whole number plus whole number, fraction plus fraction. The result is also 7 11/12. With less than 1/3 time.

Thank u sir, tomorrow is my maths test i forgot to do it just after an year of learning it😂. Your ways of teaching are so clear.I would like to attend the maths class often if i had a teacher like you.

To all those thinking they are bad at math you are not. Believe me. I used to be worst at it to the extent that I dodge math class. But now realising I can not further my education without math. I have to love it. Now I teach my fourth grader fractions, long division and equations. I couldn't have done better. I can say I love math now. We dance when ever we work math problems with my son. And now he is also beginning to get much better. Say to yourself you can do it. Then practice more often . Make it your hobby. Watch more videos on YouTube, like math antics Uncle Bryce and many more.😂
