I read in a differnt comment section ... Reznor's version was like a suicide note and Cash's was like a eulogy
Its the perfect description of where each man was in life during creation and the emotional rollercoaster life binds us with

Trent sings about friends abandoning him. Johnny sings about friends dying.

I love them both and Trent went through the most human reaction one can go through. Honestly Trent's reaction was the right way to handle this.

When Trent said the song wasn't his anymore, he was talking about how Cash's version is not a cover, but a different song altogether. NINs version is about being at the bottom of the pit, while Johnny's rendition is about the closure of his life.

I agree with Trent. The video is what really did it for me.

As it happens sometimes the course of one mans life is shared in some way with another Trent's song and Johnny's performance of it takes both of them to a different level if it doesn't drag the heart out of you you clearly don't have One that's the power of both of them

I'm old enough to remember the NIN version (still have the CD). Both versions are excellent and carry weight in their own right. Cash's version is gut wrenching knowing it's a reflection of life. A life with extreme highs, extreme lows, and some regret. It's a reminder that the "things" in our lives are just dirt and the people in our lives is what matters. Be sure to check out Lolli Wren's version of Hurt. A new spin on an iconic tune but just a great.

The interpretation of the song and the lyrics from Reznor in the throes of addiction to a eulogy for Johnny Cash sung by himself, it transcends

Hurt became Cash's. Not on purpose. Even though it was Trent's moment at that time when he wrote it and the darkness behind it. Cash's life was going. His career was set in stone. This song became his goodbye song. His swan song. Basically saying don't make the same mistakes I did. Learn from my mistakes. Make them your own. When he passed away, the song became a spiritual song for Cash. Now that song is a door opening for people who never heard of Cash, hey come in and listen to me. From the Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk The Line, Big River, and so many others. These songs are for you.

Trent was born to write this song and Johnny born to sing it ( Bono)

i remember once being very down and going to a bar midweek that no one really ever visited. out of NOWHERE it was like a group of people all walked in were being super loud, rude to the worker and took over the jukebox. i remember ordering a new pint, logging in to the jukebox on my phone and playing Johnny's version hella loud.

the shift of that bar's mood is still hilarious to think about til this day.

To be honest, I never heard this song until Cash. I like a lot of NIN's songs and don't know how I missed it... except I don't buy music anymore. Radio/Satellite is what I use now, it just never played. When Youtube suggested a song by Cash, I gave it a listen (I'm 54 and have a country music upbringing even with my shift to rock in my teens and bounce back and forth regularly), I was not disappointed. At even my age, I can feel that build up of regret and sorrow. The producer's vision to have him sing this can't be understated, somehow he knew.

Both songs are impactful just in different ways. NIN is like a suicide note weighed down by the darkness of addiction. That’s the antagonist of the song. An antagonist you could win against although very difficult. Cash’s version is like a eulogy. It carries the weight of regret and depression of the encroaching end. That’s the antagonist time and death. That’s a battle no one can win.

Simply put NIN is a young man wading in darkness trying to find direction while Cash is an old man looking back at his life at the friends and family lost to time.
