Gravitropism, basically, when trees are in an area where the soil is bad or any other area that negatively affects the tree, and if it has just enough energy to move, it'll "crawl" using its underground roots to another, more habitable spot for it to grow better. That's also why it leaves an earth trench behind it.
However, there's also a cool tree called "Socratea Exorrhixea", a.k.a the walking tree which can move whenever it wants to. It has its roots above ground and, if it is not getting enough sunlight, they will grow new roots in the direction of sunlight and cut the connection to the roots in the back, letting them rot. However this takes long.
Really cool in my opinion.

SCIENCE FACT: There's one tree in S.America called Socratea Exorrhixea (belongs to a palm tree family) which can shift its location base on the sunlight it receives. If the tree got shaded by its surrounding trees from the sunlight, in fighting for it's life it's left and right roots will shift slowly bit by bit towards the best location where the tree itself can receive a direct sunlight.

The tree supposedly “walks” from shade to sunlight by growing roots in the direction it wants to travel, and then allowing the old roots to lift into the air and die
