Killing Quack Grass | 1 year lawn renovation review

Quack Grass is a hardy perennial, and tends to prosper in late Summer in the lawn. There are no good herbicides for homeowners to use, so you either have to kill it with Round-up (glyphosate) or starve it out using the method covered here. If you do nothing, the next year the Quack grass patches will be larger.

Nice video! And great looking lawn!

I just wanted to share that it can be a good idea to wait a few days before reseeding a patch where quack grass once was. After being cut short or pulled quack grass releases chemicals that are allelopathic to other plants, and slow the growth and germination of nearby seed. A good example of naturally occurring allelopathic plant chemical warfare is seen in black walnut trees which release a toxin called juglone. My fathers yard has some beautiful black walnut trees that are about 34 years old now. Over the years I’ve seen these trees in his yard kill off the surrounding grass, weeds, maple, and ash trees. I think only moss and a few other very short weeds/plants grow under the canopies of these black walnuts now.

I just removed at least a wheelbarrow full of quack by hand from yard 😅

Love how hand weeding is immediate results, I get impatient with the pawn sometimes. Looking Amazing!

i used a weed plucker tool and I pulled out about 130 quack grass out of a very small area. My palm is now blistered with skin peeling off and I only got half of it out. I added new soil and peat moss and reseeded the entire lawn as well as dropping starter fertalizer. Once my hand gets better, I will continue plucking the quack grass. And I hope the new grass will crowd out the quack grass. In the meantime, I think I can trim the quack grass with scissors to make the lawn less ugly and to stop it from spreading!!!

I was going to scalp, power dethatch, core aerate and heavy over seed this fall with KBG to compete with both the old fescue and quack grass. And then next year I might change strategy... or do all that over again. In other words I'm using rhizomatous KBG as the weapon.

When will round up formulate something that will kill quackgrass and not your lawn grass. Only other way to get rid of quackgrass is to spray the whole lawn with round up which can be a pain in the ass but you got to do what you Gotta do.

The sad violin music in the background is extremely annoying, other than that the video was good.

Maybe it’s just me but I’ve found it really hard to get the roots up. I’m starting to a notice a few areas in my backyard I need to eliminate.

Does pulling quackgrass REALLY work for anyone?? Maybe for a week or 2, but those rhizomes are almost impossible to completely remove.

I’ve been pulling quackgrass in my lawn since 1996. Still there…. So, I manage the problem instead of eliminating the problem.

Just tried painting Roundup on the individual plants today. Total pain, but this method holds hope of actually killing the roots.

Fingers crossed…..

So you basically just grabbed as low as possible and pulled? No knife or digging?
I’ve got quite a bit in the front, thinking I may have to do that as well. Thanks for any help.

My yard has quackgrass everywhere. I got tired of manually pulling and digging it out. I’m just going to kill off all the grass in most areas and start from scratch. That grass looks terrible with nicer grass like kbg or perennial rye.
