Actually in my language, it is also the same… instead of green light we said blue light, green grass we said blue grass… it is kinda weird but we accept it anyway… and for your record, we did not only use this in speaking, but also deeps***t literature as well 🤣

I thought the weirdest thing was that "to want" is an adjective (hoshii desu) and that verbs can transition into the volitional form by changing "masu" to "tai" from which it behaves like an adjective again. (E.g. ikimasu -> to go, ikitai desu -> to want to go)
And the fact that the adjective suddenly indicates the tense of the sentence (hoshikatta desu -> wanted / ikitakatta desu -> wanted to go)
