You just made my mind up, been thinking about a subscription or a while but couldn’t justify it, this video just confirms it.

I like that you could compare previous segment efforts

Agree with you. I only use segments to ride to a target but Garmin Connect also does that with no charge. Creat your segment and there you have it to compare efforts, it even records wind direction which is interesting to see the effect on your time and power. I only ever used Stava to see what others have been doing. Garmin is better for looking at the data and mapping out routes, I use it for doing Audax, you can put markers on that remind you on route for controls and anything else you want.

Pretty much my thoughts, If I cant top 10 a segment, then ill try my hardest to top 10 is so right now its not worth it. If i can still upload my route after the ride to log distance. Then thats fine for me

I'm paying for it. When I first watched your video, I commented that I would never. Since then I bought a Tickr and then a Roam when the Tickr wouldn't work with my budget android phone. My bike computer was 3 times the cost of my phone! Fitness and Freshness curves and route planning made it worth 5 bucks for me.

I’ve been paying for Strava all along. Heck I’m not totally sure what the free version gives you versus the paid version. I do use heart rate and Make my own routes on the pc. Can I make my own routes with the free version? Also I find the feature called flyby on the PC pretty interesting and fun to look at. Is flyby available on the free version?

Agreed. I understand Strava needs to make money but “ Pick and Pay” should be an option.

As someone start up again, and needing to lose a lot of weight.
I might not use the extra features, but knowing I am paying for it, creates accountability to get out and run.

Training wise.... I love the power curve for looking at power too. But yeah if people don’t want it don’t pay for it :) I also use it as a diary of rides. I don’t keep brevet cards from Audax just keep them on Strava :)

Totally agree with you. I had a paid subscription for a while just because I thought it would be good for training data, but that side is pretty weak. I mostly ride just for fun, so the leaderboards mean nothing to me. I’m never going to get KOM’s. I’ve only got myself to beat. I never use the mapping, I like to get lost and explore new places and if I need to get home, the navigation on my Wahoo is good enough. The list of features is no doubt worth it for some but so long as I can and compare my own segment times, I’m happy. I’d happily pay a smaller subscription to have that and not get a nag screen to subscribe every 5 minutes!

Good review Dave. Komoot and Wahoo does it for me🚴🏽‍♂️

Ah mate, what a refreshing review. No bullshit, no faff, just honest "here you go, boom, done".
I found Strava actually ruined my rides. Instead of just "going for a ride" and having great fun, I found myself constantly worrying about getting crap times!? It's not why I fell in love with cycling. Got rid, never felt better. Having such a laugh on the bike again just feeling like a kid doing skids and going down hills fast 😁. Wicked vid as always mate 👌

Great video and really enjoying your content Dave, so thank you!

I think a lot of people will feel the same, I hope Strava can sort their business model out as it would be a shame if they didn’t survive.

I would be more than happy to have ads for the leaderboards and then have a pay option to remove ads / get all the other features. Strava have said they’re only a small team and haven’t got the resources to implement ads. Maybe if Strava do struggle to onboarding subs, a bigger company will buy them that have the ability to implement ads and make it a profitable platform.

For all the people that says it’s only the price of a coffee, if every app / online service I used wanted to charge me, I would go bankrupt - freemium / premium is a proven model and in the cycling / running world I don’t think Strava would be short of companies wanting to push their brands!

For mapping and also planning your route as you go then I find that viewranger, with ordnance survey mapping is easiest and most useful.

It even does auto route mapping now as well.

I’m going to pay just to support a top company and hopefully help them keep growing 🤷‍♂️ and I do occasionally use the routes! Lastly I’m not in the top 10 so need the leaderboard 😂😂

I really tried to like it, but it kept giving me run errors and have tried Uninstalling it and playing with settings. Had to switch to Adidas formerly runtastic I believe.

Dave, I’ve been a subscriber for a few years and the subscription model has just changed back to a single tier. Previously it changed into a three tier Summit model with certain features at certain levels which was overly complex. The live segments are a bit hit and miss but that may be my Garmin. If you don’t use the route planner (BTW, web browser version is much better than app) and not interested in leaderboards there’s enough features for non subscribers. Not being in a lot of top 10 places unless it’s a windy day, I like to compare my efforts to my friends and my previous attempts. Honest vlog and much more informative than just complaining about price.👍

I haven't got premium, but top 10 on a segment is more than enough for me. 'If you're not first you're last'
