Which is healthier, yogurt, or ice cream? You may instantly think yogurt is the healthier option. But is it?

1 cup (128g) of ice cream:
• Has about 28g of sugar per cup

1 cup (128g) of sweetened yogurt:
• Yoplait — 41g of sugar
• GoGurt — 38.2g of sugar
• Dannon — 36g of sugar
• Dannon Activia — 43g of sugar

Many times the type of sugar used in yogurt is:
• High fructose corn syrup
• Modified corn starch
• Corn syrup

Quantity of certain foods consumed in 1970 vs. 2015:
• Beef decreased by 33%
• Chicken increased by 116%
• Corn products increased by 180%
• Corn sweeteners increased by 300%
• Grains increased by 127%
• Soy increased by 190%
• Vegetable oils increased by 270%
• Yogurt increased by 1600%

Yogurt could potentially be one of the significant factors of added sugar in the diet that causes insulin resistance.

What to do if you consume yogurt:
• Make sure it’s plain
• Make sure it’s made with whole milk
• Try Bulgarian yogurt
• Try kefir
• Use drops of stevia as a sweetener instead of buying sweetened yogurt

The sad thing is the fact that these yogurt products are marketed to our kids, and marketed as "healthy".... But another great point you made is to check labels, that is very necessary!.

I almost never had those yoghurts. I just eat plain Greek Yoghurt with nuts, cinnamon, blue berries or strawberries and 99% dark chocolate.

< -- Bulgarian here. When I was in the US, almost all the yogurt was sweetened and with added flavor. Real actual yogurt is plain and tastes a little sour (we even call it sour milk here in Bulgaria). Love your videos, I've lost a lot of fat from just using your intermittent fasting advises !

This makes a lot of sense as I actually gained weight eating low fat yoghurt!

Although this is a problem worldwide, I have to say it's a lot worse in the US compared to other countries. The added sugar in the products in the US is insane. I'm Spanish and when I started to read the nutritional info of the products in the US I freaked out, everything has nearly twice as much sugar as the equivalent products in Spain. I guess it's because of legal restrictions in the EU, because the food companies are the same ones in most cases (although the brand name can differ).
An additional problem is the misguiding nutritional info "by portion", with portions of maybe 4 g. With an accuracy of 1 g, and the rounding, a product can have nearly 25% sugar and still state "0 g" in the table. In Spain (I think in the EU in general) this is provided for 100g of product always, so if something has sugar, there is no way to hide it with these cheap tricks.

Dr. Berg, your videos have made a huge impact on my life and opened my eyes to so many misconceptions. Thank you for all you do to help educate the world in the face of massive corruption within our messed up food and pharmaceutical industries.

As a Bulgarian, I approve this message.

There's nothing else like the yogurt we produce. We don't actually call it like that. The wording we use in Bulgaria is sour milk, but yogurt is one foreigners understand.

yoghurt is a dairy product, but the kind that has a lot of lactose in it. The lactose is sugar, but without the sweet. So at the end you have additionnal sugar for the taste + lactose, that is a lot of sugar. People often forget about lactose.

Getting a bit ‘clickbaity’.
This didn’t surprise me one bit.
Natural plain Greek yoghurt doesn’t have anywhere near as much sugar as ice cream.

We make our own plain yogurt without any additives except whatever is in the milk we use. We have done this for decades in Eastern Europe but no one called it Greek yogurt. It's super easy to do, try it.

Boil the milk (whole or 2%), let it cool down where its lukewarm. Mix in 1-2 tablespoons of plain yogurt ( you'll have to use store bought one to start then you'll just keep reusing the one you made). Mix it well, cover and wrap in a towel, all around. Place it somewhere where its not too cold, my mom always puts it in a corner next to the stove. We do this in the evening and by the morning yogurt is done.

Sometimes, it might not work and there might be several reasons for it: milk was either too hot or too cold. The room where you left it is too cold but try it few times and see how it goes. I'd love to hear if you had success with it.

Also, once its done we keep it in a fridge. It can last for up to two weeks or so. We keep it until it changes the smell, and taste to more sour one. You'll be able to tell the difference.

Dr Berg, hi. Can you explain the effects of whey protein on the body? Is whey a good source for muscle growth? Thank you!
