Inspirational footage shows 'miracle' teen coma patient awake after four months

A teenage coma patient has defied the odds and woken up after four months spent unconscious in hospital. Ryan Smith, who had ignored his dad's plea to wear a helmet because he did not want to mess up his hair, was hit by a van while riding to his summer job in July. His devastated family feared he might never wake up - but the plucky youngster has not only opened his eyes, but is out of bed and undergoing intensive physiotherapy to recover his muscle control. He has even managed to speak his first words in months, saying "hello", "dad" and "mum". His father Mark Smith, a paramedic, said hearing his son speak again had finally shown him "what it was like to cry with joy". Report by Charlotte Cross.
