Intrinsic vs Extrinsic Motivation... which is better?

Which is better to motivate your team? Intrinsic Motivation or Extrinsic Motivation?

One of the most well known theories of motivation is the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic motivators.

Extrinsic motivators, are external rewards that come from outside of us and can be things such as money, recognition, or status. If you receive a bonus for completing a project on time, that's an extrinsic motivator.

Intrinsic motivators, on the other hand, come from within. They can be things such as autonomy, belonging, meaning and the enjoyment of work itself. If you feel a sense of pride when you complete a challenging project, that's an intrinsic motivator.
