Dr John Henrik Clarke's classic lecture on this subject is an excellent supplement to this post!

Songhai was a truly powerful and ancient West African empire. Truly one to be proud of

I dont think people understand the magnitude of what happened with the Fall of thr Songhai Empire. You pointed out how it pushed African people towards the coastal regions and caused more trade with Europeans. I think the destruction of the Songhai Empire created the environment for the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade.

I've always wondered what West African history would have been like if Songhai had access to gunpowder weaponry and resisted the Moroccan invasion.

We can only speculate.

The Songhai empire should have had an Idris Alooma like leader before the Battle of Tondibi. History would be so much different if they did. But im happy to see the Songhai resisted longer than I expected.

Yes the very oftentimes volatile relationship between Arabs and Africans needs to be discussed more.

If Songhai also had firearms in large ammunitional numbers then the tides would be way more even or may have put The Songhai in a better position

Morocco was exhausted because of the successful War against Portugal and the Ottomans, so Soldiers must be paid and Weapons must be bought, so Morocco did not have a Choice.

Mai Idris Alooma turned down Askiya Dawūd request, instead he opted to back Mulay Ahmad Al Mansūr as the “rightful ruler of the moors”. Shortly after the fall of Great Songhai the first slaves were taken to the Americas, culminating in Moroccan occupation of Timbuktu and Gao for centuries, but although Pasha Judar was met with heavy resistance from Tuareg, and Fulbe tribes it was said that whenever he came across a non combatant he treated them with respect and dignity. First they invaded the salt mines of Teghazza then onto the plains of Tondibi where the Moroccan army of nearly 2000 marksmen faced off with Askiya Dawūd’s army of 60-70, 000 Calvary where they were no match against the musketeers and canons, April through August of 1591 was a truly sad time for our people, but we will rise again, of that I have no doubt. ✊🏿

This is just another reason why one should not view medieval Africa though a Pan-African lens.
