When I was growing up it was all a keep up or give up attitude. If you had a problem or didn't understand anything it was tough luck, you get left behind. Our school the was top public school in number of top scoring student. This was probably because teachers dedicated all the time with the top performers and everyone had to struggle.

One class or teacher literally had about five students in a corner that they taught and let the rest of the class do whatever they wanted.
