Sarcasm, plaid shirts, "being non mainstream and embracing it" and coffee shops were already a thing in the early 90's. Hipster culture is just a lot of bastardized 90's retro without context.

While I'm a bit old to fall for the "hipster" trap, when I was younger, I had the same attitude about music. I got over it pretty quickly when I realized that more people knowing about band I like is actually a good thing. The more people that hear you and hear about you, the better your chances of success and the longer your career will be. I'm sure I could come up with a dozen bands that I loved and were amazing but broke up after their first or second album. They don't break up because they suck or because the band members hate each other. They break up because it's expensive to be in a band and if they're not making money then they're wasting their time. Now, when I find an amazing musical act, I try to tell as many people as possible just so those acts can continue to make music for ME. It's completely selfish but in a good way.

I hate how people assume that, if you enjoy history, literature, older films, fashions from other eras, etc, that must mean you're a pretentious hipster. No, it doesn't. Enjoying the classics wasn't always fashionable. People used to get called "nerds" and "geeks" and were seen as weird for liking things like that. I know I was as a kid.

Ive found that the guys that grow their beard out just because it "looks cool" or is "manly" are some of the most girly dudes Ive met.
