Stop wasting time watching a bunch of tutorials that get you nowhere. In this video I break down the biggest mistakes you’re making while learning to code, and how to get out of the tutorial hell trap.

These are the videos I mentioned as great learning resources:

In a nutshell,
1. Start building, stop watching endless tutorials
2. Follow a structured learning path, don't just learn things randomly
3. Focus on one thing at a time, don't jump from language to language
4. Practice deliberately, have a system in place, don't just repeat the things endlessly
5. Stop memorizing unnecessarily and start understanding things more, learn asking the right questions

The first point hit home the most for me. I've watched tutorials, mistaking all those sleepless nights and follow-along projects for actual progress. about 4-5 wasted years later, I've still got nothing.

I'm planning on making video games – not sure that makes me count as an official "Software Developer", but everything mentioned in this video is very relevant to my current situation.

Anyway, all that to say, thank you for your advice. I'm going to drag myself out of tutorial hell this year. Wish me luck.

from @3:39 - so that has been my problem the whole time...thanks for pointing it out brutally. I have watched several help videos so far, but the points you make are the ones that makes most sense and relatable at the same time.

Excellent video! and exactly what I'm suffering from, feeling stuck every time I get on the computer to do some code and feeling like a failure when I don't remember how to do something i learned recently, so thank you

Thank you! I have FINALLY figured out WHY I hated an onsite coding test with Concast years ago. Up until this video I put the blame squarely on myself. However, thanks to you, it all makes sense.
I was tasked to write a piece of PHP code that would connect to a DB, create a table and then perform CRUD functions.
Although I had done this many times over I could not remember from scratch the syntex to even connect TO the DB. I sat there, staring at an empty screen- well, with SOME code written so people wouldn't think I was THAT dumb. I finally began asking one of the guys who originally sat done with me when doing the meet and greet portion of the interview. He answered but was aggivated a bit with me. I asked a 2nd question and he reminded me I couldn't ask anymore. After struggling for at least 30 minutes I finally got up, went into the hiring manager's office and told him I don't code "off the top of my head like this". He politely said he understood and I walked out. Fun times

Thank you for being so straight forward and honest for a path to follow for a beginner. I finished learning HTML, CSS, and GIT/GITHUB commands - all which I feel very comfortable with now than when I first started a couple of months ago. Now I’m learning JS which has been a bit of a bottle neck, but I’m trying to build small projects with my limited knowledge at this time in hopes it’ll click better.

I enjoy your content. You are correct that we get stuck in this tutorial hell! I went through an online bootcamp and you basically don't learn anything other than so very low level fundamentals.

Thanks for keeping it 💯. Mastering anything is difficult. True progress requires passion and obsession. Relish the challenge.

The more I research how to break into programming the more I come across your videos (could just be the algorithm haha) but I think it’s time to subscribe 🤓

I agree with saying don't learn tutorial without applying but saying don't learn tutorial at all, I don't agree.

My best advice is, after learning how to build a website or an app on the tutorial, try applying it into your own basic project or take some quiz online to train yourself before continuing the tutorial. Not learning tutorial at all would leave you lacking essential things

I feel exposed! Thanks for pointing this out. It's so exhausting to be going through 100 "Hello World" tutorials for different languages and thinking that you're learning to program.

Your channel is very underrated, your advice on how to learn are much better than the ones in 1M+ channels because they are actually practical and useful and those channels only want a longer video to have more ads.
