My 2 cents. They saw what happened with 4080 launch (12GB vs 16GB, totally different cards). Huge backlash.
Now they removed higher performing one and will sell only "one" 5080 which was ment to be 5070. And leave proper 5080 to be sold as Ti or Super.

How Nvidia thinks they can get away with a 12GB 5070 when they already had to correct the 4070Ti to have 16GB vram with the 4070Ti Super is beyond me. 4060Ti 8GB all over again.
