KYOTO MAIKO PLAYS A GAME WITH A TOURIST

A beautiful maiko in Kyoto plays Konpira Fune Fune against my husband, an Australian tourist. At each player's turn, if the tin is there, he or she must put a flat hand on it. She is still in her first or second year of training. The flowers are traditionally for first years (the more training, the less ornamentation- it’s to help hide the lack of polish and accent the cuteness of young girls while geikos aim to emphasis the elegance of a mature woman).

Also, her hair style is done once a week. To maintain it, she must sleep on a tiny pillow that supports the neck and keeps the head elevated above everything. She must do this for her entire maiko training. Once a maiko graduates to geiko, they switch to wigs which are made by entirely different hairdressers.
