It aims to boost economic growth, regional cooperation, and China's global influence. A key project is Greece's Port of Piraeus, now the Mediterranean's busiest port under Chinese ownership.

This stirs NATO and Western countries' worries about potential impacts on their military deployment, naval presence, and logistics given the port’s strategic location in the Mediterranean. While BRI loans help countries develop, they're often seen as less transparent than IMF or World Bank loans, raising "debt-trap diplomacy" concerns where China leverages debt to gain strategic advantages.
