Stop using Write Defaults please. When turning off Write Defaults, depending on your animator methods, your facial animations could get stuck, this is one way to fix it.

5:00 The next 20s is a VERY important part. Watch him carefully. turn off all overwrite. Make the reset. Set it to weight 1. Move it to second in the hierarchy. If it's not working for you you may have simply missed these unspoken steps.

PLEASE NOTE!!! My life was hell because you forgot one thing! at 6:30 - Yes, you hold shift and click all the way down to "VRC"... BUT I HAD BLENDSHAPES PAST "V" in the alphabet and i couldnt figure out why it still wasnt working... because you ALSO need to select ones PAST VRC.

A stupid oversight! But, just wanted to throw this out there for others!

I feel like write defaults isn't inherently bad. It may not work in all cases which is why it's an option that you can set per layer; however, it should be noted that write defaults can be an easier, more optimized method of setting values on or off as long as all the logic for that setting is contained in the same layer. While some find it easier to use write defaults off, I personally like it for toggles and sometimes even in my gestures layer by containing the logic to a single layer.

Thanks for this. I had to come here after another tutorial got me MOST of the way through avatar creation, but the write defaults bit screwed up the animations. Your tutorial not only aligned my model with the documentation recommendation, but fixed my sticky expressions.

Only part I got a little stuck on was making the reset layer work. I had accidentally missed the part where you adjusted the weight of the Reset layer. Kind of a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment.

If your mouth is still getting stuck, make sure you aren’t using the visemes in your facial animations, because the fix excluded resetting those so you’re lip sync still works

Another great thing to do is to make keyframes for things that shouldn't move. That really solved most my problems with expressions.

If you know how to use write defaults and what it really does it's actually very convenient for animation.
There's a reason write defaults is on by default.
