How cool is it that Matthew McConaughey is teaching us how to prune blackberry canes?

My sister and I are avid gardeners, but mostly raise vegetables and flowers. My sister just planted a small bed of blackberries on a whim so I did a little research on blackberry horticulture and found your videos on YouTube. You seem to have written the Bible on the subject. Thank you many times over for your clear and commonsense instructions. If I didn't live in a condominium, I would put a "YOU PICK" sign at my driveway too. I look forward to viewing many more of your videos.

Hi Alan & your beautiful wife, I got out my paper drivers license, now they take your thumb prints which I believe is a GREAT THING, an I had my passport,
I didn't know they were taking a new picture 😳 an just had my hair up after showering & it's good for 8 yrs, That's longest I've ever gotten,
Stopped to get Gas & run in Walmart to see what plants they have etc.
But I truly needed to see these blackberry bushes all steps, as I told u back in July we bought 2 peach 🍑 trees 2 blackberry 2 blueberry, I did what u said & ive kept the blackberry & blueberry in screen room on our Deck, my husband had built on last year.
So I'm listening while driving & in store, oh found some seeds on HOSS, buying today .
God bless you
Mrs. Josette Tharp 👍👍 p.s - that video of the blackberry belt is a GREAT IDEA U NEED TO PATENT THAT 👍👍👍👍👍 or fertilizer etc user ....👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

I needed this video four years ago when we planted a few bushes in a bed in our backyard... we thought bigger was better... that bed is a mess. I think we're going to start over, a little older, a little wiser and see if we have better luck. They've been one of my favorite parts of spring and summer every year, though!

I typically prune mine at around 8ft, but I keep steel pipes on them from lowes which are 10ft long, but sink the pipes 2.5ft into the ground. I simply tie the canes up to the pipe, and this allows me to let them grow tall. I also grow thornless ones making them easy to work with.

I use gypsum, and deep aerate my bushes with a steel broad fork so they can grow huge.

I'm growing some unidentified "heirloom" thorny erect blackberries hardy in Minneapolis. They were passed through at least 3 families before I got a couple. My guess is that they are descended from wild ones, naturally selected for zone 4. One was forgotten in a 20" plastic tub over winter and STILL very productive.
The thorns are WICKED, but cowhide gauntlets protect me. I keep finding volunteers 100' or more away from the planting; those are definitely from seed.

I have a U-Pick operation that is doing very well. It has been heavy picking for about a month. Now, the berries are beginning to slow down. I figure next week will be the end of major production.
As far as I know, the berries don't need other plants to pollinate... but I may be wrong. I have 4 different varieties.

All the "volunteers" that come up should fruit next year.

If the "transplant" takes hold, it should bear too. You'll find lots of volunteers coming up, sometimes far away from the original plant. I'm doing a vid on potting up the volunteers soon.

When a cane bears fruit in the spring, it dies. It's pretty easy to tell them from the vigorously growing new canes. Cut out the dead/dying canes when they are done with production. I cut mine out in about mid July, but your timing may be different.

Sometimes a big leaf or two seems to take a lot of energy away from the rooting process. In the past, I have cut the leaf in half and that seemed to work well. You can try several techniques and see which one works best for you. I like for them to be "pencil" size... seems to work best. I just did some grapes today. Some were pencil size some were a lot smaller... I just used what I had...

What? Trimming blackberries without glasses on? Will you allow 5ft. canes when the trellis goes up? I'll be facing that decision here in about a month. I would rather pick them taller than kneeling to get at them. What do you think?

When I grew my first blackberry bush, the main stem grew about 6 feet tall before it started tipping. So I trained it to tip into a pot so I could bury the tip and root it. After repeating that process for a few years, I had a whole row of bushes!

Probably... they heat of the summer is NOT a good time.
I have recently been digging up the unwanted sprouts that come up in the walkways and planting them. This is working GREAT. They already have a root system started. See if you can go dig some.
I will be doing a vid this week on digging them and potting them up.
