Iron deficiency anemia signs & Symptoms

There are several types of anemia but iron deficiency anemia is the most common one.

Here in this video we have discussed the signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anemia.

Unusual tiredness:
This tiredness or fatigue happens because your body lacks the iron it needs to make a protein called hemoglobin, which helps carry oxygen around your body.

Pale skin:
Skin that’s paler than usual, as well as pale coloring of the inside of the lower eyelids, are other common symptoms of iron deficiency.

The hemoglobin in red blood cells gives blood its red color, so low levels caused by iron deficiency make the blood less red. That’s why skin can lose some of its color or warmth in people with iron deficiency.

Shortness of breath:
Hemoglobin enables your red blood cells to carry oxygen around your body.
When hemoglobin levels are low during iron deficiency, oxygen levels are likewise low. This means that your muscles won’t receive enough oxygen to do normal activities, such as walking.

As a result, your breathing rate will increase as your body tries to get more oxygen. This is why shortness of breath is a common symptom.

Spoon-shaped fingernails:
Usually, the first sign is brittle nails that chip and crack easily.

In later stages of iron deficiency, spoon-shaped nails may occur, in that the middle of your nail dips and the edges raise to give a rounded appearance like a spoon. This condition is called koilonychia

Heart palpitations:
Low iron means low haemoglobin and low haemoglobin means low oxygen carrying capacity of blood. That means the heart has to work extra hard to carry oxygen.
This may lead to irregular heartbeats or the feeling that your heart is beating abnormally fast.

Dry and damaged hair and skin:
Iron deficiency lowers the level of hemoglobin in your blood, which may reduce the amount of oxygen available to cells that cause hair growth. When skin and hair are deprived of oxygen, they may become dry and weak.

Restless legs:
Iron deficiency is linked to restless leg syndrome.

This condition involves a strong urge to move your legs while they’re at rest. It may also cause unpleasant crawling or itching sensations in your feet and legs.

Oral findings:
In severe iron deficiency anemia you may find red cracks at the corners of the mouth. It is called angular cheilitis.

Iron deficiency may also cause mouth ulcers, dryness and burning sensation

Less common findings of iron deficiency

Strange cravings
Feelings of depression
Cold hands and feet
More frequent infections

In conclusion, iron deficiency is a common condition that can have serious consequences if left untreated. The above mentioned signs & symptoms can affect daily activities and quality of life, and it's important to seek medical attention if you experience them.

I’ve dealt with this for years and was told I have anxiety and depression. I looked at my blood test results online and saw an indicator of anemia so I took and iron supplement with vitamin C and I have my energy and focus back.

Few years ago my hemoglobin was 6.8. Last year I was hospitalized and my doctor said I was severely anemic, around 5. something. I wasn't really paying attention as much as I should have. But I have an appointment later to be seen about testing how low my hemoglobin lowered. I'm 43 going 44 in few days. I have all of the signs and symptoms that were explained in this video. I shall keep everyone updated after my appointment. Even one of my daughters is going to be seen for this.

I just been through this, it’s not fun and can get very serious quickly 2 ambulance trips, 2 blood transfusions and 6 iron transfusions later I’m finally feeling human again! Don’t ignore these symptoms!

I've been diagnosed with very low hemoglobin anemia. This happened before many years ago when my main symptom was loss of hair. A lot. Otherwise didn't notice much but used to get pain in my arms sometimes very bad and severe migraines. Felt better after taking iron tablets. Was diagnosed with the same thing again 2 weeks ago after a so called routine test after 7 years! Should be done yearly as i also have pernicious anemia. Doctors are trying to save money nowadays as it comes out of their funds in the UK. Didn't have any symptoms just a little tired. Now the doctor wants to do a stool test. Not happy about that at the moment. Gets one more stressed than getting cured. 😮😮

I noticed my anemia about 4 years ago. I use to jog 3 miles 3-4 times a week. Started getting tired quicker and itchy. Got test done and said everything was good except my iron. They said it was a couple points low. It's harder now. I get tired after running for 60 seconds. I have to stop because im out of breath. Just started having slight breathing problems. I never had problems with my breathing before that. I work out regularly still. I feel weak a lot. Its not fun. Trying to get my life back the way it use to be. I still do what i been doing for the last 27 years. Just not as extreme. I stopped doing a lot of things like full court basketball and jogging because i don't like the heart palpations. Every time i go to the doctor because i get nervous they say im healthy. I just walk now. I play basketball still but not full speed. Just 1 on 1 or i shoot by myself. Im 46 and im in excellent shape but anemia makes things a little difficult at times. 🙏 for anyone going through this and that you'll get your life back on track. Thanks for the video
